Early life
Mary Ann Stewart, a prolific singer in her own right, had sung roles for the Ohio Players, Curtis Mayfield, and Aretha Franklin. Morris "Butch" Stewart, his uncle, was a popular musician and producer. Laney had already learned how to play piano and drums by the age of nine. Laney began playing on jingles at the age of 12. He went from writing to composing with a life of his own jingles as a youth. With Ramsey Lewis' "This Ain't No Dream," he had his first commercially released songs on CBS Records by 15. He became a regular in Chicago's burgeoning underground house music scene and became one of the first house designers to produce music for Arrogance, such as "Crazy" [1], which was released on DJ International Records in 1986. Laney's uncle, Wayne Stewart, Tony Brown, and Patrick Leonard all started working as a session musician. Leonard, who was known for his appearances with Madonna, "Like a Prayer," etc., was Laney's most influential keyboard influence. Stewart and partner Kenneth Hale formed Minute Men, a jingle business that created iconic spots for Bud Light, McDonald's, and Coca-Cola by 18. They became the "go to" guys for urban based advertising juggernauts like the Burrell ad agency and DDB Needham. They've also been given an award for their efforts on the California Lottery ad campaign. By night, he was attending House clubs, jingle sessions, and meetings with ad executives.
