Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes reigned over the weekend box office with a $56.5 million North American opening, according to studio estimates Sunday, giving a needed surge to an uncertain season in theaters. The film from 20th Century Studios and Disney that built on the rebooted Apes' trilogy of the 2010s had the third-highest opening of the year, after the $81.5 million debut of Dune: Part Two in early March and the $58.3 million domestic opening of Kung Fu Panda 4 a week later.

A24's action-thriller Civil War managed to hold off the new horror film Abigail to repeat atop the box office this weekend. Civil War dropped 56.4% from last weekend's $25.5 million debut to win for a second straight weekend with an estimated $11.1 million, via Box Office Mojo. It managed to hold off Universal's Abigail, which debuted in second place with an estimated $10.2 million.

At the Box Office, action films took home the weekend. Godzilla x Kong: For the second week in a row, the New Empire remained at the top of the charts. The sci-fi thriller starring two of the most frightening creatures in big screen history has grossly grossed $31.7 million for the estimated three days.
