Early life

Stewart was born in Los Angeles, California, on April 9, 1990. John Stewart, her father, is a stage manager and television producer, while Jules Mann-Stewart, her Australian mother, is a script supervisor and filmmaker. Jules were adopted by a Jewish couple in California, Norma and Ben Urman in 1953; a DNA test revealed that one of Kristen's biological maternal grandparents was Ashkenazi Jewish. Stewart has an older brother, Cameron B. Stewart, as well as two adopted brothers, Dana and Taylor. After 27 years of marriage, her mother applied for divorce in 2012. Stewart grew up in the San Fernando Valley. She attended local schools through the seventh grade, and as she became more involved in acting, she continued her education by distance until graduating from high school. Stewart figured she'd be a screenwriter or a producer while raising her family's involvement in the entertainment industry as non-actors, but she never thought of being an actress. I wasn't that "I want to be famous, I want to be an actor." I never set out to perform, but I did keep practicing my autograph because I love pennies. I'd write my name on everything."

Personal life

Stewart lives in Los Angeles. "You're not lost if you're bisexual," she said in 2017, adding, "You're not confused if you're bisexual." It's not confusing at all. It's quite the opposite for me." Stewart spoke about the effects of her sexuality on her career's success, saying she had been warned not to be public with her mother in order to ensure that she would be cast in mainstream roles. "I don't want to work with people like that," she said. Stewart identifies himself as a feminist. She suffers from equinophobia, or the fear of horses.

When Stewart was filming Fierce People, she portrayed Anton Yelchin as her "first heartbreak." Stewart dated Michael Angarano, the Speak co-star, from 2005 to early 2009. She had been in a four-year relationship with Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson. Stewart was photographed in July 2012 with her Snow White and Huntsman director Rupert Sanders announcing an affair; the day the photos were released, both Stewart and Sanders, who were married at the time, released public apologies. Stewart was in a relationship with visual effects producer Alicia Cargile from mid 2013 to fall 2016. She was in a relationship with New Zealand model Stella Maxwell from late 2016 to late 2018. Stewart has been in a relationship with screenwriter Dylan Meyer since 2019, and she announced in November 2021 that she and Meyer were engaged in November 2021.

Stewart wore the dress she wore to the premiere of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 to a CharityBuzz auction in 2012 that supports those affected by Hurricane Sandy. Through the non-buildOn, she participated in the establishment of a school in Nicaragua in 2016, with the intention of educating children in a safe environment and breaking the cycle of poverty and illiteracy. She raised $500,000 for Hurricane Sandy relief in the upcoming year by speaking with an unidentified "Middle Eastern prince" for 15 minutes.

Stewart is ranked 7th on AskMen's list of "Top 99 Women" for 2013. In 2012, 2013, and 2016, Glamour UK named her as the best-dressed woman in 2012, 2013, and 2016. The Hollywood Critics Association gave Stewart the Actress of the Decade Award in 2020.

She appeared in The Safety of Objects (2001), as the tomboy daughter of a struggling single mother (Patricia Clarkson). In the thriller film Panic Room (2002), directed by David Fincher, Stewart played the tomboy, diabetic daughter of a divorced mother (Jodie Foster). For her appearance, she was nominated for a Young Artist Award. Stewart was cast in another thriller, Cold Creek Manor (2003), playing Dennis Quaid and Sharon Stone's daughter and receiving a Young Artist Award nomination for her role following Panic Room's success. Due to her hectic schedule, she began homeschooling early in her career.

Stewart's first acting appearance was in the children's action-comedy Catch That Kid (2004), opposite Max Thieriot and Corbin Bleu at age 14. Stewart appeared in the film Undertow (2004), as Lila. Stewart appeared in the Lifetime/Showtime television film Speak (2004), based on Laurie Halse Anderson's novel Speak (2004). Melinda Sordino, a high school freshman who almost stopped speaking after being insulted, was Stewart, who was thirteen years old at the time of filming. "Ms. Stewart creates a convincing character full of pain and uncertainty," the New York Times said. Stewart appeared in the fantasy adventure film Zathura: A Space Adventure (2005), portraying Lisa Budwing, the irresponsible older sister of two young boys. They transform their house into a spacecraft hurtling uncontrollably in outer space when playing a board game. Critics lauded the film, but Stewart's appearance attracted little media attention. During the bulk of the film, her character is immobilized. Maya was played by Griffin Dunne in Fierce People (2006), the following year. In the supernatural thriller film The Messengers, she played Jess Solomon.

In In the Land of Women (2006), a romantic drama starring Meg Ryan and Adam Brody, Stewart appeared as teen Lucy Hardwicke. Stewart's appearance as well as the film's performance mixed reviews. Stewart appeared in Into the Wild's Sean Penn directed version earlier this year. Stewart received mixed feedback for her portrayal of Tracy – a teen singer with a crush on teenage adventurer Christopher McCandless (played by Emile Hirsch). Although Salon.com deemed her work a "sturdy, sensitive job," Variety's analyst Dennis Harvey wrote, "It's unclear if Stewart is really playing hippie-chick Tracy as vapid, or if it comes off that way." Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Achievement by a Cast in a Motion Picture was given to the film. Stewart appeared in Jumper and also appeared in What Just Happened, which was released in October 2008. She co-starred in The Cake Eaters, an independent film that has only been seen at film festivals. Both the film and Stewart's performance have received a lot of praise. Stewart "really shines," The Arizona Republic's critic Bill Goodykoontz said, "She gives Georgia a vitality that defies any sort of pity one might feel for her. "She gives Georgia a power that makes us forget her vulnerability."

Bella Swan, the Stewart character in the romantic fantasy film Twilight, based on Stephenie Meyer's book of the same name, will be played by Stewart. When director Catherine Hardwicke visited Stewart for an informal film screening that "captivated" her, she was on the set of Adventureland. Edward Cullen, her vampire boyfriend, appeared alongside Robert Pattinson, who portrays Edward Cullen. "capturing...the first awakening, that awareness of your body, and ardent desire," Stewart referred to her role. In November 2008, Twilight was first introduced in the United States. Stewart's performance received mixed reviews, with Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly praising her for delivering "Bella's detachment" and her obligation to bust through it, while Claudia Puig of USA Today chastised her acting for being "wooden" and lacking variety in her "blank" facial expressions.

She has been praised for her work in Adventureland (2009), a comedy-drama film written and directed by Greg Mottola, and co-starring Jesse Eisenberg. "Stewart is more than just attractive in this role," James Berardinelli said, "She makes Em Em a fully realized woman" and some of the most intricate development results from Stewart's camera. Stewart was "beautiful, enigmatic, and highly experienced," according to Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times. "Stewart's fragile, spooky power is used to good effect," MSN Movies' James Rocchi said. Stewart appeared in Bella's sequel to Twilight, titled New Moon, and she has received mixed feedback for her role. Stewart was described as "the heart and soul of the film" by Variety's Jordan Mintzer, who praised her for adding "both weight and depth to dialogue; Bella's psychological wounds seem to be the genuine deal." Stewart's "lonely-girl blues" will soon be tiresome, according to Manohla Dargis of The New York Times, and Bill Goodykoontz of The Arizona Republic said, "Stewart is a huge disappointment... She sucks the emotion right out of the film." In Eclipse, her third film, which was released in June 2010, she reprised her role. Critics were kinder towards the film than to its predecessors.

Stewart appeared in The Yellow Handkerchief, which premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival and was distributed in theaters in 2010. She appeared in Welcome to the Rileys, which premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, alongside James Gandolfini. In The Runaways, a biographical film of writer-director Floria Sigismondi's titular band, Stewart portrayed Joan Jett. Stewart met with Jett to prepare for the role and prerecorded songs in a film's studio. "It turns out that Stewart is really good at capturing Jett's icy, robust, but-cool girl swagger, adding the needed elements of vulnerability that make it a great show here," the Metro Times' Bill Holding said of him. Stewart is a true rock star here." In addition, A. O. Scott of The New York Times said a "watchful and unassuming" Stewart "gives the film its pulse and soul." Stewart received the BAFTA Rising Star Award at the 63rd British Academy Film Awards in February 2010.

In 2011, Stewart ranked No. 1 on Forbes' list of "Best Actors for the Money" in Hollywood. In 2012, Forbes named her as the world's highest-paid actress, with total earnings of $34.5 million. On November 18, 2011, the fourth installment of the Twilight film series Breaking Dawn Part 1 was published. Despite Stewart and Pattinson's chemistry, the actor "beautifully underplays" the role, according to Dan Konis of The Village Voice, while Emma Dibdin of Total Film portrayed the relationship as "like a sad, destructive charade" after the actors' chemistry.

Stewart was voted number one on Forbes magazine's list of "Hollywood's Top Actors for the Money" on December 6, 2011. She became the face of a new unidentified Balenciaga perfume on January 13, 2012; its name was announced as "Florabotanica" in June. In 2014, she appeared in Jenny Lewis' "Just One of The Guys" music video and in the short film 9 Kisses of The New York Times.

In Olivier Assayas' Clouds of Sils Maria, Stewart followed Juliette Binoche and Chloe Moretz. At the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, the film premiered. Her role in the film was critically acclaimed. "Stewart's habitual low-keyed style, which can border on the monotone, has a strong sense of contrast," Todd McCarthy of the Hollywood Reporter said. Variety's Peter Debruge praised Stewart's "spontaneous, agitated energy, which makes her the most watchable American actress of her generation." In her reaction to the film's twist, Robbie Collin of The Daily Telegraph described her appearance as "sharp and subtle, knowable, and then suddenly distant," and she praised the "brilliant lightness of touch" in her role. Stewart received the César Award for Best Supporting Actress for his appearance, becoming the first American actress to receive a nomination in thirty years. Adrien Brody, who received the César Award for Best Actor in 2003, is the second American winner since her. Stewart appeared in Still Alice, a drama film that premiered at the 2014 Toronto International Film Festival, alongside Julianne Moore. Critics praised her role in the film.
