Kirk Brandon (born 3 August 1956) is an English musician best known as the leader of the band Theatre of Hate and Spear of Destiny.
Personal life
Kirk Brandon attended Churston Ferrers Grammar School in Devon as a child. Brandon suffered with reactive arthritis in 1987 and could not walk for more than a year. Christina, a Danish woman, married Brandon in 1994. He was declared bankrupt only after he had been made.
Brandon sued Boy George for malicious falsehood in 1997 and lost. In his 1995 autobiography Take It Like a Man, George revealed the truth about his love for Brandon and their marital and sexual affairs. Brandon said that reports about the gay affair in the early 1980s harmed his career as a guitarist. He also protested the lyrics of Boy George's "Unfinished Business," which seem to have been directed at him: "I hear you married a Danish woman... You lie, you lie, and you lie." Well, you know what I mean." Brandon, George's publishers, Sidgwick and Jackson, along with Virgin Records and EMI Virgin Music Publishing, have sued him. The judge accepted the defendants' case and ordered Brandon to pay a portion of their court costs.
Brandon also sued GlaxoSmithKline UK in January 2008 for personal injury as a result of taking the anti-depressant drug Seroxat. In 2011, Brandon underwent heart surgery. In 2012, he became a tutor at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music.
Musical career
Brandon's music career began in 1978, in Clapham, south London, with the formation of punk band The Pack, in which he was both the singer and songwriter.
Brandon, Scottish-born drummer Rab Fae Beith, and two Canadian brothers, Simon and Jon Werner, were among the pack members. The Pack's last live performance took place at the 101 club in Clapham.
Brandon formed the post punk new wave band Theatre of Hate in 1980, recruiting Stan Stammers on bass guitar, Nigel Preston on drums, Billy Duffy on guitar, and John 'Boy' Lennard on saxophone. With the single "Do You Believe in the Westworld," Theatre of Hate had their biggest hit from the Westworld album. "The album debuted at #40 in the UK Singles Chart in January 1982, and it climbed to #17 in the UK Albums Chart in March 1982."
In 1983, the Theatre of Hate was disbanded. Brandon and Stammers were then joined by Lascelles James on drums as Spear of Destiny. The new band took a more melodic and less aggressive sound, separating themselves from post-punk and pushing a bit more toward mainstream pop.
Brandon's lyrics for Spear of Destiny began to explore the classic pop topics of love and romance while still investigating the political implications he wrote about in Theatre of Hate. Several line-up changes followed, with the band expanding to a 6 piece and then contracting back to a 4 piece. Spear of Destiny never turned to record sales, and Spear of Destiny had only had one Top 20 hit.
On their 'Poppyfields' tour in 2003, Brandon did a solo tour as support to The Alarm. His collection included some new pieces performed on an acoustic guitar with electric pick-up as well as some from his time with Theatre of Hate and Spear of Destiny.
He appeared in Dead Men Walking, a punk supergroup, before resurrecting and touring with Spear Of Destiny in 2007 and 2008. Brandon is on tour with Spear of Destiny and Theatre of Hate, as well as a redesigned Dead Men Walking, The Pack, and acoustic performance with cellist Sam Sansbury.
