Kim spent his youth as either a central defender or a defensive midfielder, but after his boss's suggestion, he converted his position into a forward a few weeks after signing his first professional contract with Ulsan Hyundai. He struggled to settle in his new role at first, but now he is proving his worth by being one of the top forwards in the Korean football league. His progress as a striker over the past few years has been demonstrated by his ever-increasing goal scoring record.

Kim was a key figure in Ulsan's winless campaign in 2012. Kim played in all 13 games, winning 6 of them and ending the tournament with 6 goals. With such success, he was dubbed "Attack on Titan" or "Chinook."

Kim joined Shanghai Shenhua's Chinese Super League team on July 8, 2019, Choi Kang-hee, reunited with his manager. In a league match against Hebei where he also scored his first goal for the club in a 2–1 loss. Kim quickly established himself as an integral part of the team and would personally score 10 goals in 15 games as the club moved away from the relegation zone and went on to win the 2019 Chinese FA Cup.

After his deal with Shanghai had come to an end, Kim joined Lion City Sailors in Singapore on a three-year deal on November 15, 2021. He will make his debut in the 2022 Singapore Community Shield game against Albirex Niigata Singapore, where he scored his first goal and brace for the club in a 2–1 win, winning his first silverware with the Sailors in a dream debut.

Kim scored his first hat-trick for the Sailors on April 1st 2022 as the club cruised to a 4–0 win over Balestier Khalsa during the 2022 Singapore Premier League season.
