She wanted to become an airline pilot but instead majored in Human Development and Nutrition (she changed her major because of her "love and passion for health and fitness"). She began teaching aerobics, which culminated in her appearance in the famous Galaxy Fitness competition, and in 2002, she was awarded her Pro Card as an IFBB (International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness) fitness champion. She is also a model who appears in pageants and has appeared on numerous magazine covers.
There were only two times in her life where she was unable to be physically fit and active. She was quite overweight when she first started teaching aerobics because she had trouble with depression, which she managed to overcome by exercising. Later, as training for a fitness competition, she tore her Achilles tendon and needed seven months to recover, during which time she became a health and fitness specialist.
Kim lives in Hermosa Beach, California, and married German bodybuilder Gunter Schlierkamp in March 2007. She was previously married to an F-16 pilot. Kim and her partner, Gunter, welcomed their first child together on June 3, 2010, a baby boy named Jake Alexander.
