Club career
Tierney, a native of Douglas on the Isle of Man, migrated to Wishaw in Scotland, aged ten months. He played for Celtic as a child and signed for the club when he was 7 years old. He was educated at Motherwell's RC Primary and Our Lady's High (one year behind fellow footballers, twins Nicky and Chris Cadden) and then attended St Ninian's High School, Kirkintilloch, which has a development partnership with Celtic. He has expressed his desire to emulate late Tommy Gemmell, a member of the Lisbon Lions team who grew up in Wishaw (specifically, Craigneuk), and was in the same position as him.
He advanced through the ranks in youth and established a reputation as a reliable wide player in the club's development squad, both in defense and attacking. He joined the first team squad on a pre-season trip to Finland in August 2014 and made his debut in a friendly against Tottenham Hotspur. Despite Celtic's loss, Tierney described his first appearance for the first team as a "dream come true." He continued to play in the development squad throughout 2014–2015, and during a Development League match against Heart of Midlothian, he scored a goal from the edge of his own penalty box.
Tierney made his competitive senior debut for Celtic on April 22, 2015, arriving as an 81st-minute replacement in a Scottish Premiership match against Dundee. He made his first team appearance of the season by playing over an hour in a league match away from St Johnstone.
Tierney had a breakthrough season in 2015–16, playing in over 30 games and displacing the more experienced Emilio Izaguirre as the first-choice left back. He was given both the Players' and Writers' Young Player annual awards for his work, as Celtic also won the league championship. Despite a keen interest from Premier League clubs, Tierney agreed to a new five-year deal on June 24th, extending his tenure at Parkhead until 2021. Tierney sustained ankle ligament damage during preparation on October 27th, 2016, and was initially barred from action for two months after making his first appearances in the UEFA Champions League group stage. He received recovery for a recurring shoulder injury and watched several Celtic games as a common supporter in the company of his childhood friends during the layoff, which caused him to miss the League Cup Final.
He made his long-awaited return to the Celtic team in a Scottish Cup match against Albion Rovers on January 22, 2017. On May 7, Tierney was named PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year for the second year in a row, making him the first to do so since Craig Levein in 1986. He sustained a jaw injury early in the 2017 Scottish Cup Final and had to be recalled for medical care. Celtic won the match 2–1 to bring an end to a domestic treble and undefeated season. Despite his long absence due to injuries, he appeared in 40 games during the campaign.
Tierney was named captain on 8-8 August 2017, but he also went to central defender to command a back line of teenagers in a Scottish League Cup match against Kilmarnock; Celtic defeated Celtic 5–0, with Tierney providing an assist and scoring with a "wonderful kick" from 40 yards. On October 30, he extended his deal with Celtic until 2023, a week after scoring in a crucial league victory over nearest opponents Aberdeen.
He had earned more personal accolades by the end of the season, winning both the Players' and Writers' Young Player awards for the third season in succession, and he was instrumental in securing a major 'double treble' for the club, with more than 50 appearances and appearances in the entirety of the domestic cup finals, including Motherwell. On December 2nd, 2018, Tierney appeared in Celtic's victory over Aberdeen in the 2018 Scottish League Cup Final. He was ruled out of action shortly after a hip injury, and he was back in action on February 24. He had also developed a hernia, which required surgical intervention.
Tierney agreed to Arsenal's Premier League club for £25 million. Tierney did not recover from the early part of the 2019–20 season after undergoing double hernia surgery in May 2019. In a 5–0 victory over Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup on September 24, he made his first-team debut for Arsenal. Tierney scored the first goal in a 4–0 home win over Standard Liège scored by Gabriel Martinelli a week later. In a 2–2 draw with Crystal Palace on October 27, he made his first appearance in the Premier League on October 27th. In the game against West Ham United, his season was even more interrupted after suffering a dislocated shoulder.
Following Arsenal's resuming of the Premier League, Tierney's outstanding work for the club following the COVID-19 pandemic earned him the Player of the Month award for June. In a 3–2 victory over Watford on the last day of the 2019-20 Premier League season, he scored his first goal for Arsenal on July 26th. Arsenal defeated Chelsea in the FA Cup Final on August 1, 2020, beating him 14th FA Cup.
Tierney was in the starting 11 in the 2020 FA Community Shield, which Arsenal clinched a 5–4 victory over Liverpool in the penalty shootout after the game was 1–1 after 90 minutes. Tierney scored the first goal in a 4–0 away league victory over West Bromwich Albion on January 2nd, 2021, and then assisted in the final goal, which was scored by Alexandre Lacazette. On the Arsenal official website, his spectacular strike was subsequently named the Month's Goal. In a 3–2 victory over Benfica in the Europa League round of 32, he scored for Arsenal, making him the first Scot to score for Arsenal since Willie Young in March 1980. He signed a long-term deal with Arsenal in June 2021.
Tierney played for Arsenal from 2021-222 during the 2021-22 season before suffering a season-ending knee injury in March. Arsenal lost league games against Crystal Palace, Brighton, Tottenham, and Newcastle due to his injury, and they barely made it to Champions League qualification. Tierney had hyperextended the knee during a game in February but exacerbated it a month later while walking in the Arsenal training ground, but it was later revealed in the All or Nothing: Arsenal series. He returned to action at the start of the 2022-23 season.
International career
Tierney competed for Scotland and Scotland at the U18 and U19 levels. When the ConIFA World Cup tournament was being held, he had also considered playing for the Ellan Vannin team that represents the Isle of Man.
Tierney was given his first call-up to the senior Scotland squad for a friendly against Denmark on March 10, 2016. Tierney played in the first half of the match, which Scotland defeated 11-0 at Hampden Park; afterward, his Celtic teammate Charlie Mulgrew replaced him at the break.
Tierney was deployed right-back in Scotland's matches against Slovenia, Lithuania, and Slovakia, as a result of his increased adaptability compared to fellow left-back Andrew Robertson, and left with a three-man defense in the World Cup qualifier in 2017.
In a 1–0 loss, Tierney was named Scotland captain for a friendly match against the Netherlands in November 2017.
Tierney scored a vital own goal in a 2–1 loss to Israel in a UEFA Nations League match in October 2018. Robertson said both he and Tierney were playing out of place in Alex McLeish's 3–5–2 system to accommodate both players.
Tierney withdrew from the Scotland squad in November 2019 due to a hip injury in their UEFA Euro 2020 qualifiers against Cyprus and Kazakhstan. After being in close contact with Stuart Armstrong, who had tested positive for COVID-19 in October 2020, he was expected to pull out of the squad for a Euro 2020 play-off semi-final against Israel. Armstrong, Tierney, and Ryan Christie announced later that they had been playing video games together in the same room.
Despite playing from a central defensive position, Tierney contributed three assists in a 4–0 victory over the Faroe Islands on March 31, 2021. In June 2021, he appeared in two of Scotland's finals at the postponed UEFA Euro 2020 finals, but he missed the opener against Czech Republic due to injury.
In a friendly against Poland at Hampden, Tierney scored his first goal for Scotland on March 24th 2022. He suffered a training ground injury that kept him out of action for the remainder of the 2021–22 season. He was unable to play in a World Cup playoff against Ukraine in June, which Scotland lost 3–1.
