Career
Maniquin's session vocalist progressed to a role as the group's lead singer. D'Extra Wiley of the 1990s R&B group II D Extreme was also a member of Maniquin briefly before transferring to MCA Records. In 1989, Epic Records released a lone self-titled album. In both sound and lyric, it's lead single "I Wanna Ride" was an answer to Pebbles' hit single "Mercedes Boy" on the radio. Charlie Wilson of Gap Band fame produced and co-written both artists' songs. Lattimore left Maniquin shortly after to pursue a solo career, and the group was later disbanded.
In late 1994, Lattimore signed to Columbia Records and released his first album, Kenny Lattimore, in 1996. Two of the Top 20 hits on the album were "Never Too Busy" and "For You," written by Kenny Lerum's high school buddy Kenny Lerum. In 1996, Lattimore was named Best New Artist at the NAACP Image Awards, and the album later received Gold sales status.
He grew into From the Soul of Man, another critically acclaimed collection of classically styled soul music released in 1998, including hits "Days Like This" and "If I Lose My Woman" as well as a standout cover of The Beatles' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."
After a short hiatus, the singer resurfaced on Arista Records when then-president Clive Davis signed him to a new deal. Davis's second album, Weekend Under L.A. Reid's Regime, was released by him, but he soon realized that a select number of artists were only allowed to accompany a small group of artists to his next venture, J Records. On both directions of the Atlantic, the title track and first single were anchored by a sample from Blondie's "Republication" and became a radio favorite. Davis may have had a different vision for his career, but he ended up recording three albums for Arista Records as Reid realized a modern-day interpretation of a classic soul duo with his new bride, Chante Moore, who produced two duet albums that were both critically and commercially acclaimed. Lattimore is known for his dramatic stage shows, vocal agility, and romantic ambiance, in keeping with his "lover man" image that debuted with his career. On stage, the New York Times dubbed him a "modern soul man." In interviews, the singer has long stated his personal mission to bring the "strong, but sensitive, and caring side of Black men."
In 2003, Lattimore and his then-wife Chante Moore released Things That Lovers Do, a compilation of classic soul songs from the 1970s and 1980s, as well as two new original songs. The standout singles were the smooth and chic "Love Your Head To Your Toes" and a back-up of René & Angela's "You Don't Have To Cry." With a sell-out touring stage performance, Lattimore and Moore kept promoting the album.
Following Things That Lovers Do, Lattimore and Moore have collaborated on another collaborative album. Uncovered/Covered (2006), the pair's second collaborative album. On the Billboard R&B Charts and at number ten on the Billboard R&B Charts and number two on the Billboard Gospel charts, the album debuted at number ten and number two. The couple's cover version of "You're All I Need to Get By" served as the BET reality show "The Family Crews' theme song.
Timeless, Lattimore's 2008 cover album for Verve Records entitled Timeless, was released on September 9, 2008. Norman Connor starring Michael Henderson appeared on "You Are My Starship" in the lead role. Lattimore was also included in Brian Culbertson's uptempo dance song "Another Love."
SincereSoul Records, Lattimore's first record company, was founded in 2012. Back 2 Cool, he said, was released on January 22, 2013. "Find a Way," Ivan "Orthodox" Barias & Carvin "Ransum" Higgins' album's first single, "Find a Way," debuted on radio on Valentine's Day 2012. Kelly Price appeared in "Back 2 Cool"'s second single.
