Early life
Leung was born in New York City to Chinese parents and was raised in Manhattan's Lower East Side's Two Bridges section. His family lived in Midwood, Brooklyn, where he grew up before attending high school in Old Bridge, New Jersey.
Leung's appointment as a University Scholar at New York University brought him to New York University. He began acting in his junior year, alongside Catherine Russell and Nan Smithner, and then briefly with Anne Jackson at HB Studio. During this period, he appeared mostly in downtown spaces and black box theaters, working with companies such as Ma-Yi Theater Company, New Perspectives, and STAR, a group of actors-educators based at Mount Sinai Hospital.
Career
In Brett Ratner's Rush Hour, Leung made his debut in 1998 as the evil henchman Sang opposite Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker. Ratner wrote, "Leung] is a great actor." In my opinion, he's comparable to Philip Seymour Hoffman in terms of talent. In the films Red Dragon, The Family Man, and X-Men: The Last Stand, he would later work with Ratner. In his debut Keeping the Faith in 2000, Edward Norton played Leung. Norton said Leung's "showstopping appearance...turned a throwaway scene into one of the film's best," according to The Washington Post. Norton, who was captivated by his acting abilities, said Leung would be ideal for a part in Hamlet or Osborne's Look Back in Anger: "You see deep levels within him, and he conveys an apprehension." I don't believe anyone has used his full range yet." In addition, Leung has appeared in a number of independent and television films, as well as films, including four films with Brett Ratner and two with Spike Lee. In 1998, he appeared in Terrence McNally's passion play, Corpus Christi, and in 2002, he made his Broadway debut in the musical Thoroughly Modern Millie, also appearing on the cast recording.
He appeared in the independent film Shanghai Kiss with Hayden Panettiere in 2007 and received a Special Mention at the San Francisco International Asian Film Festival. He appeared in the last season of the HBO drama series The Sopranos for the same year. Miles Straume, a character from the series's fourth season to the remainder of its run, was followed by him on ABC as Miles Straume.
