Keith Maurice Ellison (born August 4, 1963) is an American politician and advocate who serves as Minnesota's 30th Attorney General.
Ellison, a member of the Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL), was the United States Representative for Minnesota's 5th congressional district from 2007 to 2019.
He served as the Deputy Chair of the Democratic National Committee from 2017 to 2018.
Ellison served as Vice Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and Chief Deputy Whip in Congress.
He served on the House Committee on Financial Services, as well as the House.
Ellison was the first Muslim to be elected to Congress and the first African American representative from Minnesota. When he began campaigning for chair of the Democratic National Committee in November 2016, he earned the support from feminist organizations and senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Chuck Schumer of New York.
His candidacy prompted renewed scrutiny of recent comments and links with the Nation of Islam, which attracted the ire of some moderate Democrats.
Ellison was defeated by former Labor Secretary Tom Perez, who later named Ellison as Deputy Chair, which was approved by a unanimous vote of DNC members on June 5, 2018.
Ellison won the Democratic primary and then went on to defeat Republican Doug Wardlow in the general election, becoming Minnesota's first African American to run statewide, as well as the first Muslim in the United States to win statewide office.
Personal life
Ellison and his former wife, Kim, a high school mathematics teacher, had four children between 1989 and 1997. Keith Ellison is a Muslim, and although Kim Ellison is not a Muslim, the Ellisons' four children were raised in the Muslim faith. Jeremiah, one of their sons, was elected to the Minneapolis City Council by one of their uncles.
Kim Ellison revealed that she had been suffering from moderate multiple sclerosis for many years during Ellison's 2006 campaign. Keith Ellison filed for a legal separation from Kim Ellison in 2010, and his divorce was finalized on May 2, 2012. Kim Ellison was elected vice-chair in 2012 and as an at-large member in November 2016.
Early life, education, and career
Keith Ellison, the third of five children, was raised Catholic in Detroit, Michigan by his parents, Leonard Ellison, a psychiatrist, and Clida (Martinez) Ellison, a social worker. Ellison and three of his siblings became attorneys; his other brother became a doctor. One of Ellison's brothers is also the pastor of "Church of the New Covenant Baptist" in Detroit. Ellison's youth was influenced by his family's involvement in the civil rights movement, as well as his grandfather's service as a member of the NAACP in Louisiana.
Ellison graduated in 1981 from the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy, where he was active in sports and a senator in the student government. Ellison converted from Catholicism to Islam at the age of 19, before returning to the following explanation: "I can't say that I was the most observant Catholic at the time [of my conversion]. I had to start to look around and ask myself about the country's socioeconomic situation, issues of justice, and transition. When I looked at my spiritual life and wondered at what might influence social change and justice in society, I wondered what might be able to inspire social change and justice in society.... "I discovered Islam."
Ellison married his high school sweetheart and moved to Minneapolis to attend the University of Minnesota Law School after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in economics in 1986. Ellison obtained his Juris Doctor degree in 1990.
Ellison served for three years at Lindquist & Vennum, where he was a litigator specializing in civil rights, employment, and criminal defense law. Ellison was later promoted to executive director of the Minneapolis-based nonprofit Legal Rights Center, which specialized in the defense of indigent clients. Ellison began private practice with the law firm Hassan & Reed Ltd, which specializes in trial law. Ellison has also been involved in community service on a regular basis. He served as the unpaid host of a public affairs talk show at KMOJ radio and has also served as a track coach for several companies, working with youth between the ages of five and 18. "It's a great community-building device because it's for people of all ages and genders," he said. Anyone will figure out how to fit in."
