Kate Jones Life

Kate Jennifer Jones (born 10 April 1979) is an Australian politician and Queensland Government minister.

She is a member of the Labor Party and was elected to the seat of Ashgrove in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland in 2006, which was previously held by former Speaker Jim Fouras (ALP).

She was Minister of Environment, Resource Conservation, and Climate Change before 19 June 2011.

In 2012, she lost the seat to Campbell Newman, who went on to become prime minister before retaking the office in 2015.

Prior to the 2017 election, Jones contested and gained the new position of Cooper.

She is both the Minister of Innovation and Tourism Industry Growth in Palaszczuk and the Commonwealth Games Minister.

Education and community involvement

Jones attended Kelvin Grove State High School in Kelvin Grove. She was the Premier of the first YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament in 1995, a non-partisan political party for young people. She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Politics and Journalism at The Queensland University of Technology while working part-time at The Gap Markets and graduated with a Master of Environmental Law from the Australian National University in 2014.

Jones is a member of the Ashgrove Historical Society, Ashgrove Climate Change Action Group, and serves on the Enoggera Respite Centre's management committee. She is also a member of The Fred Hollows Foundation and World Vision.

Personal life

Kate Jones is married to Paul Cronin (former chief media advisor to Queensland Premiers Anna Bligh and Peter Beattie, as well as Queensland Rail's media relations). Thomas Anthony Cronin, a 2010 adolescent boy, was born in 2010.

Kate Jones Career

Political career

Jones served as a Senior Media Advisor to Queensland Minister for Public Works, Housing and Racing, Robert Schwarten, and as Media Adviser to former Queensland Treasurer David Hamill before entering Parliament.

Jones was elected to state Parliament in 2006 for the seat of Ashgrove, replacing Jim Fouras, who served as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly in the 1990s. She was named Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability in the incoming Bligh cabinet after holding her position in the 2009 election and replacing Andrew McNamara.

Jones stepped down from cabinet on June 19, 2011 to concentrate on defending her position against newly elected LNP leader Campbell Newman at the 2012 state election.

Jones used lolly-pink branding rather than Labour's shade of red; this tactic was based on Kevin Rudd's approach during the campaign; Jones' supporters were sent pink T-shirts with the phrase "Keep Kate."

Jones was disqualified in the LNP's historic victory at the time, suffering a 13.4% swing as part of the LNP's stunning triumph. Newman became Premiership.

Jones attempted to regain her old seat in the state election in January 2015. She won, defeating Newman on a ten percent swing—more than double what she needed. She was the second attempt to depose a sitting premier in Queensland since 1915.

Ashgrove was abolished prior to the 2017 state election, so Jones contested and gained the new seat of Cooper.

Jones was elected Minister of Education, Minister of Tourism, Major Events, and Small Business Minister in the Palaszczuk Ministry on February 16, 2015, a position she held until 11 December 2017.

On December 12, 2017, she was elected Minister for Innovation and Tourism Promotion as well as Minister for the Commonwealth Games.

Jones resigned on September 10, 2020, the last sitting day before the 2020 Queensland state election in October.
