Karan Johar Life

Karan Kumar Johar (born Rahul Kumar Johar, 25 May 1972), also known as KJo, is an Indian film director, producer, screenwriter, costume designer, and television star who works in Hindi films.

He is the son of Hiroo Johar and Yash Johar, a producer from Hiroo, Pakistan. Johar made his directorial debut with the widely distributed romance Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), which earned him the Filmfare Awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay.

His next two films, Kabhi Kabhie Gham... (2001), and Kabhi Naa Kehna (2006), were both very popular in the overseas market.

My Name Is Khan's (2010) social drama gained him his second Filmfare Award for Best Director.

Raazi, a 2018 spy drama, received the Best Film award from Filmfare.

These, as well as numerous other award-winning films he has directed under the Dharma Productions banner, have established him as one of India's top director-producers. Johar has also ventured into other areas of the entertainment industry.

He hosts a television talk show, Koffee with Karan, and a radio show Calling Karan, as a judge on competition reality. Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa, India's Next Superstars, is one of India's Next Superstars.

Early and personal life

Johar was born in Bombay, India, (present-day Mumbai) to film producer Yash Johar, the creator of Dharma Productions and Hiroo Johar, on May 25th. He has Punjabi Hindu roots from his father's side as well as Sindhi Hindu roots from his mother's line. He attended Greenlawns High School. He went to H.R. after Greenlawns. Both the College of Commerce and Economics, located in Bombay (now Mumbai).

When he appeared in the 1989 Doordarshan serial Indradhanush, Johar began his career as an actor. He was inspired by commercial Indian cinema as a child: Raj Kapoor, Yash Chopra, and Sooraj R. Barjatya were among his influences. Johar followed numerology, creating film titles in which the first word and a few others in the series started with the letter K. After watching the 2006 film, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, which was skeptical of numerology, Johar decided to abandon this activity.

"Everybody knows what my sexual orientation is," Johar said when discussing his sexual orientation. I don't have to yell it out. I won't have to spell it out, so I won't have to" spell it out. By surrogacy, Johar became a father to twins (a boy and a girl) in February 2017. The twins were born in Mumbai's Masrani Hospital. After his father's death, Johar renamed his son Yash and his daughter Roohi named Roohi after rearranging his mother's name Hiroo.

Karan Johar Career

Film career

Johar began working as an assistant director on Aditya Chopra's Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), which is considered a film landmark in Hindi cinema. With the romantic comedy-drama Kuch Hota Hai (1998), he made his own directorial debut. The first half of the film focuses on an insensitive boy (Shah Rukh Khan), his tomboyish best friend (Kajol), and the prettiest girl at the college (Rani Mukerji), while the second half focuses on the now-widowed boy's struggle to reunite with his older brother, who is now engaged to marry another man (Salman Khan). The film became a huge blockbuster at the box office and received rave reviews from critics. "Karan Johar makes an impressive directorial debut, has a good script sense, and knows how to make a film with S-T-Y-L-E," writer Anish Khanna wrote for Planet Bollywood. At the 44th Filmfare Awards, the majority of the major prizes, including Best Film, Best Director, and all four acting awards, were swept.

The ensemble family melodrama Kabhie Gham was Johar's next directorial venture, 2001). Amitabh Bachchan played a noble industrialist, Jaya Bachchan as his compassionate wife, and Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan as their two sons in the film. Kajol and Kareena Kapoor were also sisters from a lower-class family who became Khan and Roshan respectively's love interests. The film was Johar's second major blockbuster at the box office, receiving rave reviews from critics. Johar "confirms the fact that he is the brightest in film company," critic Taran Adarsh said. The premise [of the film] is straightforward, but it is the storytelling that receives the highest accolades."

Johar's third directorial venture, Kabhi Alvida Kehna (2006), explored the tense subject of marital infidelity and dysfunctional marriages set against the backdrop of non-resident Indians in New York City. The film's plot follows a washed-up actor (Shah Rukh Khan), whose annoyance with his wife (Preity Zinta) resulted in an extramarital affair with a family friend (Rani Mukerji), a schoolteacher who is also dissatisfied with her marriage to her childhood friend (Abhishek Bachchan). The film was a huge success in India and an even bigger success in other countries. Critics who praised Johar's departure from the directorial style of his first two films gave it rave reviews. "Few writers have such tight control over their screenplay as Karan Johar does," Rajeev Masand wrote. As well as him, few people comprehend the intricacies of story telling. Johar goes from highs to lows, from plateaus to peaks with the nassance of a pro. He knows how to turn a seemingly mundane scene into something special with just one line of dialogue or a hint of background music." A number of commentators praised the film's script, and it was accepted in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' library.

My Name Is Khan (2010), Johar's fourth directorial venture, was his first film not written by him. The plot follows a Muslim man with Asperger's disease and his Hindu wife, played by Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, who live in San Francisco and face racial discrimination after the 11 September attacks. The film was a huge commercial success, and critics lauded Johar's eccentric directorial style. "It's a flawless job, as good in terms of content, tone, and treatment as any film can get," critic Subhash K. Jha said. Johar's second Filmfare Award for Best Director was given to the film.

Johar didn't want to cast established actors for his lead roles in his next feature film, instead choosing three debutante actors (Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan, and Alia Bhatt). The story revolved around a group of students who are all shooting for the position of "Student of the Year" at their college. The film was a moderate commercial success and received mixed critiques from critics. Some called it "supremely entertaining and amusing," while others called it "a film that suffers from a lack of a story syndrome."

Johar then joined Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap, and Dibakar Banerjee for Bombay Talkies (2013), an anthology film released to commemorate Hindi cinema's centennial year. Each of the directors made one short film to raise the anthology of the massive anthology. Following an encounter with an intern at her office, Johar's film followed a magazine editor (Rani Mukerji) who discovers that her husband (Randeep Hooda) is gay. (Saqib Saleem). The film didn't do well at the box office, but critics gave it high marks.

Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016), Johar's next directorial venture was the musical romantic romance Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. Ranbir Kapoor was depicted in the film as a man struggling with an unrequited love for his best friend, portrayed by Anushka Sharma. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, an older woman who has a brief acquaintance with Kapoor's character, was also included in the film. The film premiered as a commercial hit and received mixed to positive reviews from critics, who described it as "Johar's most mature film yet."

Lust Stories (2018), an anthology film that was released on Netflix as a follow-up to Bombay Talkies, teamed up again by Johar with Zoya Akhtar, Anurag Kashyap, and Dibakar Banerjee. The film was praised for its investigation of female sexuality, a subject that was seldom discussed in Indian films. Johar's segment revolved around a newly married schoolteacher (Kiara Advani) whose husband (Vicky Kaushal) is still struggling to accept her lack of sexual interest.

In August 2018, Johar took to Twitter to reveal his next film Takht, a period drama set in the Mughal period, starring Ranveer Singh, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt, Bhumi Pednekar, Bhumi Pednekar, Bhumi Pednekar, Janhvi Kapoor, and Anil Kapoor. This will be Johar's second film directed by Sumit Roy, dialogues by Hussain Haidry, and music composed by A. R. Rahman. In a Fox interview, Johar said that Takht would begin filming in September 2019.

Johar would direct a love story called Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani in July 2021. The film is expected to be released in 2023 and stars Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Ranveer Singh, and Bhatt.

Johar's directorial work (with the exception of anthology films Bombay Talkies, Lust Stories, and Ghost Stories) has been published under the Dharma Productions banner, which was established by his father Yash Johar and taken over by him after his father's death in 2004. He has made several films by other directors under the Dharma banner in addition to his own directorial work. Many of these films have gone on to become hits, including Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Wake Up Sid (2008), I Hate Wolf (2006), Ae Dil Hai Dulhania (2015), Mateh Jawaani Hai Dulhania (2016), 2 States (2014), Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2018), Dhadak (2018), Simmba (2018), and Simmba (2018).
