Kapil Sharma (born 2 April 1981) is an Indian stand-up comedian, television host, and producer best known for hosting The Kapil Sharma Exhibition.

With Kapil and Family Time with Kapil, he appeared on television comedy shows Comedy Nights with Kapil and Family Time with Kapil.

Kapil Sharma was named the most popular Indian television celebrity in April 2016 by Ormax Media.

In the year 2016 and 2017, Forbes India ranked him at 11th and 18th in their Celebrity 100 list.

He was named third in the Most Admired Indian Personality List in 2013 and ranked third in the Most Admired Indian Personality List by The Economic Times.

Sharma was nominated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2014 for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to raise concerns about hygiene and other sanitation-related social problems.

President Pranab Mukherjee welcomed him to the Rashtrapati Bhavan in September 2015 to thank his service.

Early and personal life

Kapil Punj was born in a Punjabi family in Amritsar, Punjab, India. Jeetendra Kumar Punj, the father of Jeetendra Kumar Punj, was a Punjab Police chief constable, while his mother, Janak Rani, is a homemaker. His father was diagnosed with cancer in 1997 and died in 2004 at AIIMS in Delhi. He studied at Shri Ram Ashram Senior Secondary School, Amritstar, and Hindu College in Amritsar. He is listed in the list of influential alumni of Apeejay College of Fine Arts, Jalandhar. Ashok Kumar Sharma, a Police constable, and Pooja Pawan Devgan are two brothers.

Sharma married Ginni Chatrath in Jalandhar on December 12, 2018. On December 10, they had a daughter. The couple had another child, a son, on February 1, 2021.

Career

Sharma came to fame after winning the 2007 comedy reality television competition The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, in which he received a cash reward of INR 10 lakh. On the MH One channel, he had previously worked in Hasde Hasaande Ravo, a Punjabi show. Sharma has claimed that he came from Mumbai to become a singer.

He appeared on Sony's Comedy Circus and went on to win six seasons of the competition. He has appeared on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa Season 6 and another comedy sketch Chhote Miyan. In 2008, Sharma was seen as a contestant on the program Ustaadon Ka Ustaad. Kapil's own show, Comedy Nights with Kapil, debuted in 2013 under Kapil's banner K9 Productions on Colors.

Sharma was honoured with the Indian of the Year award in the entertainment category by veteran actor Amol Palekar at the CNN-IBN India of the Year awards in 2013. He was appointed Brand Ambassador by the Delhi Election Commission during the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections.

In 2015, Sharma and Karan Johar co-coordinator of the 60th Filmfare Awards. He was the host of the fourth season of Celebrity Cricket League in 2014. He appeared on the first episode of the Indian television game show Kaun Banega Crochet (Kanbanega Crop) and also as a celebrity guest on The Anupam Kher Show. In 2017, he appeared as a guest in Koffee With Karan.

Sharma appeared in Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon, a romantic-comedy directed by Abbas Mustan opposite four actresses, Elli Avram, Manjari Phadnis, Simran Kaur Mundi, and Sai Lokur, making his Bollywood debut as the male lead in the film Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon. The film was released on September 25th, 2015 to mixed reviews from critics, but for the debut, it was a record-breaking opening day.

On January 24, 2016, his show Comedy Nights with Kapil on Colors aired its last episode. Sharma's K9 Productions produced The Kapil Sharma Show on Sony Entertainment Television. The Kapil Sharma Exhibition opened on March 23, 2016, to a receptive audience.

He has signed two films as of December 2016 and is now working on them.

Firangi, his second film, was released on December 1st. Firangi, directed by Rajiev Dhingra, is a historical drama film set in the year 1920.

A biopic of his life was announced in January 2022. Mrighdeep Singh Lamba will direct the film, which has been described as Funkaar.
