Life and career

Momoi was born in Tokyo, Japan. She came from London to study ballet at the Royal Ballet Academy at the age of 12. She returned to Tokyo after three years. She graduated from the Bungakuza School of Dramatic Arts in Japan. Momoi debuted in Kon Ichikawa's Ai Futatabi in 1971 (To Love Again). She has worked on television for 35 years and has appeared in more than 60 films.

She has worked with directors including Akira Kuda (Tokyo Watsu, 1977), Tatsumi Kumashiro (Seiko Wa Tsuraiyo, 1979), Yuna (Seishun no Mtonyama, 1976), Shohei Miike (How Not, 1970), Keni Bruton (Tokyo Django), Mitani Kokobo (1997), and Sukiyaki Western Django), Yoji

She appeared in director Rob Marshall's film Memoirs of a Geisha in 2005 directed by Alexander Sokurov.

Momoi has received numerous accolades for her film appearances in Japan. She has twice received the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress twice, as well as being named Best Actress twice and Best Supporting Actress twice at the 1983 New York International Film Festival for her role in Giwaku (Suspicion).

In addition to acting, Momoi has worked on several projects in production, directing, screenwriting, and design. She has also released 15 albums as an actress and is an essayist.

At the 7th Hochi Film Award for Giwaku, she was named best actress.
