Jürgen Ligi (born 16 July 1959) is an Estonian politician, former Foreign Affairs Minister, and Vice President and Vice-Chairman of the Liberal Reform Party.
He served as Minister of Education and Research in Taavi Rivas' cabinet from 9 April 2015 to September 16, 2016.
Ligi has served as the Minister of Defence from 2005 to 2007 and as the Minister of Finance from 2009 to 2014.
Early life
He studied geography and international economics at the University of Tartu after graduating from Tartu Second Gymnasium in 1977. He earned his degree from the Estonian Business School as well. Ligi has been the Head of the Kuressaare Regional Office of the Estonian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Chief Expert of the Kaarma Rural Municipality Government, the Chief Advisor and Business Consultant, and the Economist of the National Planning Committee.
Personal life
Jürgen Ligi, son of archeologist Herbert Ligi, is the son of archeologist Herbert Ligi. Harri Moora, the mother of Jürgen, was a forensic archeologist. Priit Ligi, his brother, was also an archeologist, died on board MS Estonia, which sank in 1994. Katre, Jürgen's sister, is married to poet Hando Runnel. In addition, Juhan Viiding and politician Indrek Tarand are both related to him. Jürgen Ligi himself is married and has two children.
Political career
Ligi was a member of the Riigikogu from 1995 to 2005, 2007-2009, and 2015-2015.
Jürgen Ligi served as the Minister of Defence from 2005 to 2007.
He was nominated Minister of Finance and sworn in a day later on June 3, 2009, and was confirmed on June 3, 2009. Ligi ignited controversy in October 2014 by bringing up the Minister of Education and Research Jevgeni Ossinovski's ethnicity. Later, Ligi eventually regretted, but he was then forced to resign from his position.
Ligi became the Minister of Education and Research in Taavi Rivas' second cabinet on Monday, on April 9, 2015.
After the former Minister Marina Kaljurand decided to step down and run for president, Ligi was nominated Minister of Foreign Affairs on September 12, 2016.
