Julie Annette Rovelstad Andem (born 4 July 1982) is a Norwegian screenwriter, director, and television producer. She is best known as the creator, screenwriter, director, and showrunner for the acclaimed young adult internet/television series Skam (2015–2017).
At the 2016 Gullruten awards, the series won three prizes, for best TV drama, best new program series, and newcomer of the year.
The series has also been well received internationally, such as in Denmark, Sweden and China, and for the US market the concept has been sold to Simon Fuller's production company XIX Entertainment.
Andem will also direct and showrun the American version of Skam.
Career
Andem spent several years with the NRK's children's division. Jenter, which means "girls" in Norwegian, was created and written by the artist at NRK.
Skam began because NRK executives wanted to include more teenage girls in its programming. Andem and Mari Magnus, the series's social media director, spent six months traveling around Norway and interviewing teenagers about their lives. She then auditioned over 1,200 young actors and created scenes based on the script.
Andem was both the creator and showrunner of Skam, and she wrote and directed all 47 episodes during Skam's four seasons. In September 2015, season 1 premiered on NRK, and in June 2017, season 4 concluded.
The series was extremely popular in Norway and around the world. Many countries have made adaptations of Skam with Andem's talelines, including France's SKAM France, Germany's Druck, Italy's SKAM Italia, Spain's SKAM Espaa, Netherlands' SKAM NL, and Belgium's wtFOCK.
Andem signed a two-year deal with HBO to produce and produce shows for the network in October 2019.
