Julian Brandt Career

Club career

Julian Brandt was born and raised in Bremen. He played in his youth at SC Borgfeld and then FC Oberneuland before joining the youth academy (Nachwuchszentrum) of VfL Wolfsburg.

Brandt moved to Bayer Leverkusen, where he signed a professional deal until 2019. He made his professional debut against Schalke 04 on February 15, 2014. In a 1–2 home loss, he was recalled Son Heung-min after 82 minutes. In the first knockout round first leg against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League, three days later he made his debut in the European Cup. In the 1–2 loss to Hamburger SV on April 4, 2014, he scored his first goal for Bayer Leverkusen.

Brandt scored the winning goal after appearing as a replacement in Bayer's first match of the 2015–16 Bundesliga season on August 15, 2015. He scored in six consecutive Bundesliga matches between March 20th and April 2016, becoming the youngest player since Gerd Müller to win this by scoring 72 seconds in a 2–1 home victory over Hertha BSC.

Brandt became the youngest-ever Leverkusen player to reach 100 Bundesliga appearances on August 26, 2017, following a 2–2 draw against Hoffenheim during his age 21 years, three months, and 25 days.

Brandt was re-positioned by new club manager Peter Bosz, moving from his natural wide position to a more central role in midfield alongside Kai Havertz in the second half of the 2018-19 Bundesliga season. As a result of the positional change, his goal contribution increased in February 2019, and he was nominated for the Player of the Month award in February after scoring twice and assisting with a further four goals. He ultimately received the award, and in doing so, became the first Leverkusen player to win the award. His brace against Mainz 05 at the start of the month coincided with his 200th appearance for the club in all competitions.

Brandt, 23, was Dortmund's transfer target after scoring seven league goals, 11 assists, and later helped Leverkusen finish fourth in Bundesliga and secure a Champions League third qualifying round spot for next season. After Dortmund activated a release clause in his contract, Brandt concluded a transfer to Borussia Dortmund on a five-year contract, worth a reported €25 million.

In his first match, a 5-1 win over FC Augsburg, Brandt scored his first Bundesliga goal for Borussia Dortmund, marking his debut as a replacement for Thorgan Hazard.

International career

Brandt was selected in Germany's preliminary 27-man squad for UEFA Euro 2016, on May 17th.

He was chosen to represent Germany in the 2016 Summer Olympics, where Germany claimed the silver medal.

Brandt was selected in Germany's final 23-man squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup on June 4, 2018. Brandt made his first World Cup appearance as a substitute by replacing Timo Werner in the 86th minute in the opening match against Mexico, in which they lost 1–0.
