Julian Barratt Career

Career

In the comedy film The Mighty Boosh, Howard Moon replaces Noel Fielding's Vince Noir. Howard describes himself as a "jazz maverick" and claims to be a multitalented intellectual, but he is actually unsuccessful in his literary and romantic ventures. He is unpopular with several of the characters, including Mrs. Gideon (who never forgets his name), Bob Fossil (who often uses Howard as a puppet for his bizarre schemes), and Bollo (who often mistook him for entirely). Barratt produced all of the music for the film, which includes a mix of genres such as rap, heavy metal, and psychedelic rock.

Barratt has appeared in other dramas, most notably with his Mighty Boosh partner Noel Fielding. Dan Ashcroft, a struggling magazine writer, appeared in Channel 4 media satire Nathan Barley, and he appeared in the Channel 4 media satire Asylum, alongside Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson (who wrote and appeared in Spaced). Brian Topp in Space was created for Barratt, but Mark Heap followed him later. In How Not to Live Your Life, Barratt played Jackson, a singer. For Metz alcopop's "Freelance Scientist" commercial, he appeared. In Garth Marenghi's Darkplace spoof horror film The Padre, he appeared as The Padre. Along with Fielding, he appeared in (and was a writer for) the 1998 sketch show Unnatural Acts. Barratt was one half of an experimental comedy pair named "The Pod" with friend Tim Hope, in which they referred to themselves as a "Cyberdance Collective" before this. During this time, he appeared in the 2001 film Lucky Break.

Barratt made his directorial debut for Warp Films with theatre producer Dan Jemmett. In a Norfolk seaside town, curtains are tied. It's a dark comedic movie about a Punch and Judy guy. He appeared in Noel Fielding's "Blue Song" music video alongside Noel Fielding, Nick Frost, and Michael Smiley. Barratt appeared in Little Crackers, a Sky Comedy parody. Satan's Hoof, a 15-minute film based on his teen band, was written and directed. He collaborated with Julia Davis and Joe Frank on Frank's radio show "Isolation," which was broadcast as part of KCRW's UnFictional series in April 2014.

In the Channel 4 film Flowers, a 6 part dark comedy miniseries following the eccentric and dysfunctional members of the Flowers family, Maurice Flowers, a children's author fighting depression. In 2018, he reprised his role in the second series.

In the film Mindhorn, which he co-wrote with Simon Farnaby, he plays the title role. On May 12, 2017, Netflix unveiled it.
