Julia May Whelan (born May 8, 1984) is an American actress and writer.

Grace Manning on the TV drama series Once and Again (1999-2002) and her co-starring role in the 2002 Lifetime Television film The Secret Life of Zoey are two of her best-known actresses.

Whelan first appeared on television at the age of 11 and continued to do television appearances until she matriculation into Middlebury College in 2004; after spending the 2006-7 academic year as a visiting scholar at Lincoln College, Oxford, an acknowledged scholar. In November 2008, Whelan returned to film acting in the Cries' fantasy film Fading of the Cries.

Early life

Julia May Whelan was born in Oregon on May 8, 1984. Her father was a firefighter and her mother was a tutor. Whelan first performed in community theater at the age of five, and yearly trips to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival in Ashland, Oregon, piqued her interest in an acting career. She began acting lessons with actor/screenwriter Geof Prysirr at the age of ten. Prysirrr began a close professional and personal friendship with Whelan, eventually becoming her guardian. Prysirrr began accompanying Whelan on trips to Los Angeles, where she quickly found professional success.

Whelan and his partner, Days of Our Lives actress Derya Ruggles, moved to Los Angeles with Prysirrrr and his wife, where the three became residents in a two-bedroom apartment so that Whelan could advance her career. In an April 8, 1996, episode of the drama series Nowhere Man, Whelan quickly began to win television roles, first appearing on television in a series called "St. John Frog" in April 8, 1996.

Julia Whelan Career

Early acting career

In the 1998 TV film Fifteen and Pregnant as the younger sister of Kirsten Dunst, who played the film's pregnant protagonist, Whelan was first introduced to a broader audience. Whelan, a teen insecure youth on the family drama Once and Again, became the role for which she is now best known. Sela Ward and Billy Campbell were cast as single parents struggling to nurture a romance and eventually create a blended family together on the show.

Once and Again was praised for the talent of its cast members, particularly the younger ones, who were praised for their vulnerability; the program featured them, giving them plot lines and screen time commensurate with adult leads. Ward and Campbell's children were represented by Whelan, Meredith Deane, Shane West, and Evan Rachel Wood; Mischa Barton appeared on Ward and Campbell as Evan Rachel Wood's girlfriend. This lesbian storyline was complemented by an equally nuanced plot involving Whelan's character in a tumultuous friendship with her high school drama instructor "Mr. Dmitri," played by Eric Stoltz. Whelan, Deane, and Wood were recognized for their appearances in April 2001, winning the Young Artist Award for Best Ensemble in a Television Series (Drama or Comedy); Whelan had been nominated on her own in March 2000 for Best Performance in a TV Drama Series - Supporting Young Actress.

Whelan, who started Once and Again in 2002, has since expanded to other ventures. She appeared in The Secret Life of Zoey, a 2002 Lifetime Television film about a model student struggling with a prescription drug use. Mia Farrow portraying her mother, and Andrew McCarthy as her rehabilitation consultant made for a good cast. The film was released alongside Lifetime TV rebroadcasts of Once and Again. Whelan continued to act on television shows after matriculating in Middlebury College in 2004.

Whelan spent the 2006-2007 academic year as a visiting student at Lincoln College, Oxford. She returned to Middlebury for her senior year, and graduating magna cum lauded on May 25, 2008.
