Julia Butterfly Hill Life

Julia Lorraine Hill (born February 18, 1974) is an American environmental activist and tax redirection advocate.

She is best known for her life in a 738-day California redwood tree from December 10, 1997 to 1999.

To prevent Pacific Lumber Company loggers from cutting it down, Hill lived in the tree, affectionately known as Luna.

She is the author of The Legacy of Luna's 2000 book and co-author of One Makes the Difference.

She is a vegan.

Early life

Hill's father, a traveling minister who went from town to town, carried his family with him. Hill lived in a 32-foot (9.8 m) camper with her father Dale, mother Kathy, and brothers Mike and Dan until she was about ten years old. Julia is the middle child. Hill explored rivers by campgrounds while traveling with her family. When Hill was seven years old, she and her family were hiking one day when a butterfly touched her finger and stayed with her for the duration of the hike. Her nickname became "butterfly" from the day she was introduced. She decided to keep that as her nickname for the remainder of her life.

Her family stayed in Jonesboro, Arkansas, when Hill was in middle school. Hill, who was 22 years old at the time, was killed in a near-fatal car accident in August 1996. Hill was behaving as the designated driver for a friend who was still drinking. A drunk driver struck her friend's car from behind. Hill's skull was broken by the car's steering wheel. She didn't recovered the ability to talk and walk properly after almost a year of intensive therapy.

She said:

Hill began a spiritual journey later, leading to her opposition to the destruction of the redwood forests in Humboldt County, California.
