Judith Guest (born March 29, 1936) is an American novelist and screenwriter.

She was born in Detroit, Michigan, and is the great-niece of Poet Laureate Edgar Guest (1881–1959).

She is a winner of the Janet Heidinger Kafka Award.

Early life

In 1951, the visitor attended Detroit's Mumford High School. She began attending Royal Oak High School when her family moved to Royal Oak; she graduated in 1954. At the University of Michigan, the guest later studied English and psychology. She was also a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority. The guest obtained a bachelor's degree in education.

Personal life

Larry LaVercombe (1936-2009), a businessman who studied at a college of nearly 50 years, was married to her college sweetheart, businessman Larry LaVercombe (1936-2009). In Edina, Minnesota, the visitor, her three sons, and their families live.

Career

Until deciding to work full-time on a novel, the guest worked at a public school for many years.

Ordinary People, Guest's first book, was published in 1976 as the basis for the 1980 film Ordinary People, which received the Academy Award for Best Picture. This book and two others, Second Heaven (1982) and Errands (1997), are about teenagers who are pushed to cope with family crises. The screenplay for Rachel River, 1987, was also written by the guest.

In St. Louis, Guest co-authored the mystery Killing Time. Rebecca Hill, a novelist, stars in Cloud (1988). The Tarnished Eye, the guest's most recent book, is loosely based on a true unsolved murder in her native Michigan.
