Josh Freeman Career

High school career

Both Rivals.com and Scout.com rated him at over 7,000 yards at Grandview High School, where he was a four-star prospect. He threw for 1,946 yards and 24 passing touchdowns as a sophomore, leading to Grandview's 9-3 record and a spot in the Class 4 playoffs. In addition,, he set ten school records during his time at Grandview, including career passing yards (7,175), attempts (809), completions (385), and touchdowns in a game (6). With 23 touchdowns, he surpassed 2,400 yards through the air as a junior. He was the country's highest rated quarterback by Rivals.com as a senior and the top prospect in the state of Missouri. He was the country's top quarterback. He led Grandview to a 7–4 record, a district championship, and a berth in the Missouri state playoffs' sectional round. In 2005, he completed 151 of-286 passes (53 percent) for 2,622 yards and 33 touchdowns. The Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association also named him as a first-team Class 4 all-state champion. Freeman was voted to the Kansas City Star All-Metro team and was the top player in the Kansas City metro area for the 2005 Thomas A. Simone Award.

College career

Despite being a highly recruited quarterback, one major franchise wanted the 6' 225 lb Freeman to come to an end, which his African-American father saw as a racial injustice. Since the school still didn't have a quarterback recruit from his class, a freeman said he "didn't see it the same way" at the time. However, Freeman was uninterested because his long-awaited ambition was not to become an NFL quarterback. He was originally scheduled to play for former head coach Bill Callahan, but Kansas State head coach Ron Prince persuaded Freeman to enroll there instead.

Freeman played in 11 of 13 games this season, including starts in the final eight contests of 2006. He drafted Dylan Meier at quarterback during Baylor's second half and coached the Kansas State offense the rest of the season. On a score of 1,780 yards on 140-of-270 passing (52 percent), he passed for a Kansas State freshman record of 1,780 yards on 140-of-270 passing (52%). He was the first true freshman to play at Kansas State since 1976. In addition, he had consecutive 250+ yard passing games against Colorado and Texas, marking the first time a Kansas State quarterback had done so since Michael Bishop in 1998. Against Nebraska, he made a career-best 47 passes, clocking in at 23 for 272 yards. He made his first appearance against Oklahoma State and led the Wildcats to a comeback victory. He finished the game 10-for-15 passing for 177 yards and ran for a game-winning 21-yard touchdown with 1:11 to go. Since throwing for 3,353 yards and 18 touchdowns on 316-of-499 passing, he set new single-season school records for pass attempts, completions, and yards. Freeman had a passer rating of 132.9 in 2008, 224 of 382 passing for 2,945 yards, 20 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. The 14 rushing touchdowns were the fourth-most in a single season by a Wildcat quarterback.

Freeman played in 35 games over his three-year career in four years. He had 880 passes for 8,078 yards, 44 touchdowns, and 34 interceptions. Ell Roberson was the first quarterbacks in Kansas State history to score at least 60 points. He finished with a school-record 8,427 total yards and joined him as the only quarterbacks to reach at least 60 touchdowns.

Professional career

In the first round (17th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected a freeman. He joined the draft after having one year of college eligibility remaining. With another potential $10 million in incentives and pay, the Buccaneers came to an agreement with Freeman on a five-year, $26 million deal. Freeman played his first professional game against the Green Bay Packers on November 8, 2009. The Buccaneers won by 38–28, snapping an 11-game losing streak. He finished 14 out of 31 passes for 205 yards, three passing touchdowns, and one interception, as well as one intercept, with rookie Sammie Stroughter's fourth down touchdown pass to take the lead 31–28 minutes late in the game. The Freeman became the first quarterback in franchise history to start and win his first game. He led the Buccaneers to a 20–17 overtime victory over the 13–1 New Orleans Saints on December 27, 2009, preventing them from clinching the top seed in the playoffs for one week. Freeman finished with 1,855 passing yards, ten touchdowns, and 18 interceptions as the Buccaneers finished the 2009 season in a 3–13 record.

Freeman was the Buccaneers' starting quarterback in the 2010 season. He appeared in all 16 games of the season, becoming the first Buccaneer quarterback to do so since Brad Johnson in 2003. Freeman completed 21 of 26 pass attempts for 227 yards and five touchdowns against the Seattle Seahawks on December 26, 2010, setting a new franchise record for touchdowns in a game. Freeman finished 21 of 26 pass attempts for 255 yards and two touchdowns against the New Orleans Saints, who were playoff bound. Both appearances earned him the FedEx Air Player of the Week award. On Week 5 and 17, he was named NFC Player Of The Week. He led the team to a winning record of 10–6, barely missing the playoffs. He was ranked 86th by his peers on the NFL Top 100 Players of 2011.

In the 2011 season, the freeman appeared in 15 out of the 16 games. However, this season will be disappointing for him relative to the previous season. He only had 16 touchdowns with 22 interceptions and finished with a 74.6 quarterback rating. The Buccaneers posted a 4–12 record, defeating the Buccaneers in their final ten games of the season.

After the 2011 season, head coach Raheem Morris was fired and replaced by former Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano. In addition, the Buccaneers added new weapons for Freeman, adding former Indianapolis Colt tight end Dallas Clark, Pro Bowl wide receiver Vincent Jackson, and upgrading the offensive line with All-Pro left guard Carl Nicks. In 2012, Freeman improved, throwing 11 more touchdowns, five fewer interceptions, and 500 more passing yards than ever before. The Buccaneers ended with a 7-9 record.

After leading by a score of 14–5 at the half, the Buccaneers started the 2013 season with an 18-17 loss to the New York Jets. Freeman completed 15 of 31 passes (48 percent) and threw for one touchdown and one interception. Freeman was suspended after a poor showing in a 23-23-3 loss to the New England Patriots, paving the way for rookie quarterback Mike Glennon. Freeman was completing 46% of his passes with a near-bottom 59.3 rating (30th) when the Buccaneers started the season with a disappointing 0–3 record, and Freeman was leading with a disappointing 0–3 record. Within rumors of a growing divide with Coach Schiano, Freeman missed the team photo and his colleagues did not choose him as a team captain for the first time since his rookie season. He was released by the team on October 3, 2013 after the team tried unsuccessfully to sell him.

Freeman signed with the Minnesota Vikings on October 6, 2013. With incumbent Christian Ponder and Matt Cassel, he'll begin competing for the starting job. He switched to 12 after exchanging with punter Jeff Locke as the Freeman had worn the number in high school. He had been named starting quarterback for the Week 7 game against the New York Giants and for all future games on October 16, 2013. However, his Vikings' offseason was uneventful; Freeman completed only 20 of 53 passes and threw for only 190 yards and one interception. Marcus Sherels' only goal was a punt return by the Vikings, who lost 23–7. He was supposed to start against the Green Bay Packers. However, he was suffering concussion-like symptoms during and after the game against the Giants, and he was therefore suspended in favour of Ponder. Ponder and Cassel were the third-string quarterback for the remainder of the season.

Freeman was reported to have signed a one-year contract with the New York Giants on April 16, 2014. The contract was not officially signed until Freeman began attending the Quest Diagnostics Training Center in April 21, 2014. The Giants released Freeman on May 30, 2014.

Freeman had signed a one-year contract with the Miami Dolphins on July 24, 2015, but he returned to the team just four days later. On September 3, 2015, Freeman played in Miami's preseason finale against his former team, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Freeman completed 13 out of 22 passes for 165 yards and two interceptions. On September 4, 2015, the Dolphins released him.

Freeman signed to play with the Brooklyn Bolts in the FXFL on September 22, 2015. Freeman fumbled 5 times in the wet weather, missing three of them and throwing an intercept in his first game with the Bolts, which occurred during typhoons generated by the oncoming Hurricane Joaquin.

Freeman signed with the Indianapolis Colts on December 29, 2015. Due to injuries to starter Andrew Luck and reserve Matt Hasselbeck, he played in the final game of the regular season against the Tennessee Titans on January 3, 2016. Ryan Lindley, a former NFL signer, led to a touchdown and one intercept, as well as eight rushes for 24 yards. The Colts won the game by a margin of 30–24. He was first introduced on March 7, 2016.

From April 29, 2017, to May 1, 2017, Freeman attended a minicamp in Florida with the Calgary Stampeders. He played for the Montreal Alouettes in Dallas in May 2017 at an open tryout camp. Freeman was preparing for a workout with the Alouettes at Bishop's University on June 13, 2017. "Josh had a good workout," the Alouettes' general manager, Kavis Reed, said. He had a massive arm strength, a superb grasp of the deep balls, and good footwork. The Alouettes added Freeman to their negotiation list on January 9, 2018. On January 12, 2018, the day before his 30th birthday, he signed a two-year deal with the Alouettes.

Freeman resigned from professional football on May 26, 2018.
