Josephine Cochrane Life

Josephine Garis Cochrane (later Cochrane) was the designer of the first commercially successful automatic dishwasher, built in the shed behind her house and later built it with the help of mechanic George Butters, who became one of her first employees.

She formed Garis-Cochrane Manufacturing Company to produce her machines after her patent was issued in 28 December 1886.

Cochrane displayed her new machine at a Chicago Fair in 1893, where nine Garis-Cochran washers were installed in the restaurants and pavilions of the fair, sparking excitement from restaurants and hotels, where hot water access was not a concern.

At the Fair, she received the top award for "best mechanical design, tenacity, and adaptation to its field of work."

Garis-Cochran Manufacturing Company, which made both hand and power operated dishwashers, grew by adding to KitchenAid's Crescent Washing Machine Company in 1913, who first expanded the commercial market after Cochran's death in 1913, where the first KitchenAid dishwasher based on Cochran's design was introduced to the public in 1949.

Most households had hot water by the 1950s, but the consumer market opened for dishwashers in the 1950s.

In 2006, Cochran was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame for patent 355,139, which was released on December 28, 1886 for her invention of the dishwasher.
