Gustavus Franklin Swift Life

Gustavus Franklin Swift, Sr. (June 24, 1839 – March 29, 1903) was an American business executive. * During the late 19th century, he established a meat-packing empire in the Midwest, over which he presided until his death. He is credited with the invention of the first fully functioning ice-cooled railroad vehicle, which allowed his company to export dressed meats to all parts of the country and abroad, ushering in the "era of cheap beef." Swift pioneered the use of animal by-products for the manufacture of soap, glue, fertilizer, various kinds of sundries, and even medical products. (YMCA) * He founded "School of Oratory" at Northwestern University in honor of his daughter, Annie May Swift, who died as a student there. * His business was valued between US$125 million and $135 million when he died in 1903, with a workforce of over 21,000 people. As many as two million cattle, four million hogs, and two million sheep were slaughtered each year, according to "The House of Swifts." * The company's capital stock soared to $250 million three years after his death. In Mount Hope Cemetery, Illinois, he and his family are laid to rest.
