Early life
After attending middle school at Loyola Academy of St. Louis, Owens played high school football at Christian Brothers College (CBC) under Coach Scott Pingel. Owens received the CBC Linebacker of the Year Award during his high school years.

College career
Owens played defensive back for Missouri Western State University after the 2013 season ended, during his redshirt season (MWSU). Owens was the MWSU Male Student-Athlete of the Year during his final season in 2017. Owens was also a member of the All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Second-Team during the 2017 season. Owens served on the MIAA Academic Honor Roll through his college career. With the intention of becoming a physician, he majored in pre-physical therapy.
Professional career
Following the 2018 NFL Draft, Owens signed with the Arizona Cardinals as an undrafted free agent. Owens was suspended due to an injury during the last week of organized team activities (OTAs) before the 2018 season, and he spent the entire season on injured reserve.
Owens was waived by the Cardinals on August 31, 2019.
Owens was added to the Houston Texans practice squad on September 30, 2019. On November 21, 2019, he was added to the active roster but two days later, he was released and re-signed to the practice squad. On January 13, 2020, he committed to a reserve/future contract with the Texans.
Owens was waived by the Texans on September 5, 2020, and the Texans drafted him into the practice squad the next day. He was recalled to the active roster on October 10, and Tennessee Titans' weeks 5 and 6 games, and after each game, he was reverted to the practice squad after each game. Owens was added to the active roster on December 12, 2020.
Owens was waived by the Texans on August 31, 2021, and resigned to the practice squad. On December 4, he was admitted to the active roster. Owens was signed by the Texans on December 9, extending to a two-year, $1.175 million contract that will run through the 2022 season. Owens had his first interception in his career and first fumble revival in the Texans' upset win over the Los Angeles Chargers on December 26, 2021. Owens was put on injured reserve on January 3, 2022, after suffering a dislocated wrist injury in the team's Week 16 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.
