Jonathan Maberry (born May 18, 1958) is an American suspense writer, anthology editor, comic book reviewer, magazine feature writer, playwright, content writer, and writing tutor/lecturer.

He was named one of Today's Top ten Horror Writers.

Early life

Jonathan Maberry was born in Kensington, Philadelphia, attended Frankford High School, then on to Temple University. He started studying martial arts at the age of 6.

Personal life

In Shinowara-ryu Jujutsu, Maberry holds his 8th degree black belt. He was inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2004.

Career

Many of Maberry's early works, such as Judo and You (Kendall Hunt 1990), Ultimate Jujutsu (Strider Nolan 2002), and Ultimate Sparring (Strider Nolan 2003), featured martial arts as a theme.

Shane MacDougall, 2000): He moved away from martial arts writing and wrote numerous books on the occult and paranormal, including The Vampire Slayers Field Guide to the Unead; We Bite (also with David F. Kramer, 2009). The Cryptopedia received the Bram Stoker Award for best nonfiction writing.

Ghost Road Blues, his first book, received the 2007 Bram Stoker Award for Best First Novel. That book was the first book in the Pine Deep Trilogy, and Dead Man's Song (2007) and Bad Moon Rising (2008) followed, both from Pinnacle Books.

Maberry is also a freelance comic book writer, first for Marvel and then for Dark Horse and IDW Publishing. In Wolverine: The First Story, John Wolverine: Ghosts, was published as a back-up tale. He became the regular writer for Marvel's Black Panther series beginning with the 7th issue in August 2009, and he wrote Marvel Zombies Return: Wolverine. In 2010, he wrote Doom War and Marvel Universe Vs. Wolverine, Marvel Universe Vs. Wolverine, The Punisher, Marvel Universe Vs. Wolverine, Marvel Universe Vs. The Punisher; Klaws of the Panther; Captain America: Hail Hydra. He went to Dark Horse Comics and created Bad Blood, a joint miniseries with artist Tyler Crook, which went on to win the Bram Stoker Award for Best Graphic Novel. IDW Publishing's latest series Pandemic includes two collections of V-Wars, a five-issue standalone series Rot & Ruin: Warrior Smart, and his new series Pandemic.

Benicio del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, Emily Blunt, and Hugo Weaving were among the protagonists of the 2010 film The Wolfman, his bestselling book. On the mass-market paperback section of The New York Times Top Seller List in March 2010, the novel debuted at number 35. The International Association of Media Tie-in Writers nominated it for and received the Scribe Award for Best Film Adaptation.

Maberry began writing young adult post-apocalyptic zombie stories in 2010. Rot & Ruin, his first young adult book, received his first prestigious award (2010, Simon & Schuster). It received the 2010 Bram Stoker Award for Young Adults, an American Library Association Top Pick, a Bram Stoker and Pennsylvania Keystone to Reading winner, several state Teen Book Awards, including the Cricket, Nutmeg, and MASL; winner of the Cricket, Nutmeg and MASL; and four Melinda Awards. It was the first in a new series of post-apocalyptic zombie thrillers like Dust & Decay (winner of a 2011 Bram Stoker Award) Flesh & Bone, a series of short stories, Bits & Pieces, Broken Lands, and Lost Roads, which will be published in August 25, 2020.

The Nightsiders, a Maberry film that mixes science fiction and horror, has been released. The Orphanage, Book 1 of the Orphanage series, was selected as one of the 100 Best Books for Children in the world. In August 2016, Vault of Shadows, a sequel, was published.

The Joe Ledger Collection, in which a Baltimore police detective is recruited into a special Ops unit attached to Maberry's tumultuous Department of Military Sciences, led by enigmatic Mr. Church, is the series for which Maberry is best known. Ledger and his team are pitted against a new kind of extreme science threat in each of the books in the series. The threat in Patient Zero, the first book, is a pathogen that turns people into zombies. The villains in The Dragon Factory, a second book, are geneticists who use cutting-edge science to restart the Nazi master race eugenics program. The remainder of the series follows: The King of Plagues, Assassin's Code, Extinction Machine, Code Zero, Predator One, Kill Switch, Dogs of War, and Deep Silence. Ghostwalkers, Maberry's first standalone book based on the Deadlands table top role playing game, was published in 2015. The book was nominated for the Scribe Award for the best original novel based on a licensed property.

St. Martin's Press's most recent standalone book, Glimpse, was published in March 2018. The glimpse is a chilling thriller that explores what happens when reality and nightmares align, as well as how far one can go to shield the innocent when their own brain is a threat. Ink, a standalone, will be published by St. Martin's Griffin as a trade paperback in 2020. Although Ink is a standalone, it has elements of other books, including characters and locations from the Pine Deep Trilogy, as well as Monk Addison and Patty Cakes from Glimpse.

In addition to being a prolific editor of anthologies in a number of fields, including dark fantasy (Out of Tune and Out of Tune Vol 2), science fiction/horror, and The X-Files: The Truth is Out There); horror (The X-Files: The Truth is Out There); and V-Wars: Original Stories and Poetry by R.L. Several people include Stine, Ellen Hopkins, Linda Addision, Ilsa J. Bick, and others.

He published Devil's Advocate, one of the first two books in the X-Files Origins series, in 2017. Maberry wrote the tale about a teenage Dana Scully, while colleagues Kami Garcia (Beautiful Creatures) wrote Agent of Chaos, a young Fox Mulder tale.

In addition, Maberry released Indigo, a collaborative work of fiction cowritten with nine other writers, including Charlaine Harris and Christopher Golden.

Maberry's work became the basis of a television pilot scripted by Javier Grillo-Marxuach's "Department Zero," which was later transferred to ABC Television in May 2010.

Netflix had a television version of the V-WARS novels and comics in April 2018. Following the series's announcement, it was revealed that Maberry would be recognized as both an executive producer and creator for the Netflix series V Wars. In 2018, the first season of the Oppisode began and concluded. On December 5, 2019, the series premiered.

Maberry is a writer for the National Writers Union, a writing mentor for the Horror Writers Association and the Mystery Writers of America, a founder of the International Thriller Writers Union, and president of the NJ-PA Chapter of the Horror Writers Association.

In addition, Maberry is a contributing editor to The Big Thrill, the International Thriller Writers' monthly newsletter, and a founding member of The Liars Club, a networking group of professionals in publishing and other areas of entertainment.
