Jonathan Quick's emergence, the Kings sent Bernier to play for the Manchester Monarchs, the American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. He was selected for the 2010 AHL All-Star Game for Team Canada.
Bernier was recalled to the Kings in 2010, but Quick was attending the birth of his first child. Bernier's first NHL game of the season was a 29-save, 2–1 shootout victory over the Dallas Stars, during which he stopped all six shots he faced in the shootout. He had a 2–0 shutout against the Nashville Predators in his next game on March 30, he finished 2–0.
Bernier was a member of the Kings squad that defeated the New Jersey Devils in the 2012 Stanley Cup Final. He was an ineffective reserve who was dressed on the bench but did not participate in any of the playoffs this year. Nonetheless, Bernier's name was engraved on the Stanley Cup.
Bernier won by 23-save, 3–0 over the Minnesota Wild in his first shutout of the 2012–13 season.
Bernier was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for forward Matt Frattin, goaltender Ben Scrivens, and a second-round draft pick in either 2014 or 2015.
Bernier was involved in a goaltender brawl against Buffalo Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller in a pre-season game on September 22, 2013. The Leafs advanced to win the game 5–3. It was Bernier's first match in a professional tournament.
Bernier and James Reimer split playing time in 2013–14, but Bernier and James Reimer soon began to play together; however, as the season progressed, Bernier established himself as the starting goaltender. Bernier played one time before returning to Los Angeles on March 14 in his first return to Los Angeles. He missed five games due to this illness, which also saw the Maple Leafs defeat 5–5. Bernier sustained another lower body injury on April 3r, which required him to miss the remainder of the season.
Bernier was traded by the Maple Leafs to the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for a conditional pick in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft on July 8, 2016 (the conditions were not met). Randy Carlyle, who had been Bernier's assistant during the early part of his time with the Maple Leafs, has rejoined John Gibson as his backup goaltender for the 2016-17 season. Bernier made his Ducks debut in a 3-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins, the reigning champions, on October 15, 2016. In a 4-1 win over the Calgary Flames on November 6, 2016, he won his first match with the Ducks.
Bernier was called the starting goaltender in the final stages of the regular season after Gibson was injured. He stayed as the starter into the playoffs. Bernier then went 13 straight games without losing. He played in 39 games during the regular season, winning 21 of them. In time for the playoffs, Gibson returned to the starter role. In the third game against the Calgary Flames, Bernier made his first playoff appearance for the Ducks, when he replaced Gibson mid-game with a 5-4 victory. However, his 2017--18 season with the Avalanche was marred with injuries. Bernier sustained an upper body injury in October 25, 2017, against the San Jose Sharks, as well as a head injury on February 16, 2018, which required him to miss ten games. He sustained a second head injury in March 10, 2018, against the Arizona Coyotes, and an infection in late March kept him out for three games. The Avalanche played in the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs, where Bernier began Game 1 against the Nashville Predators due to injury to first-choice goaltender Semyon Varlamov. Bernier was himself wounded in Game 4 and was replaced by Andrew Hammond in the third period. In six games, Hammond got to start in the following two games as the Avalanche were eliminated.
Bernier left the Avalanche as a free agent after his deal came to an end in the summer. On July 1, 2018, he committed to a three-year, $9 million contract with the Detroit Red Wings. He was the back-up to starting goaltender Jimmy Howard in Detroit. Bernier scored two goals in a game against the Boston Bruins on November 8, 2019, becoming the first Red Wings goalie to do so since Jim Rutherford in 1979.
Bernier, a pending unrestricted free agent for the Red Wings, was traded by the team to the Carolina Hurricanes after three seasons with the team, as well as a third-round pick in exchange for Alex Nedeljkovic. Bernier was a free agent with the New Jersey Devils for two years, but he was unable to comply with the hurricanes on July 28, 2021.
