Went on a long, lovely ramble into a very remote corner of Boulder County this morning to find some much-needed solitude, which has been in short supply lately. Got a little rowdy once I got above the trees, though (swipe twice for video) Posted by @krakauernotwriting on Dec 26, 2022 09:16PM

I am honored (and very stoked) to report that I’m the new board chair of the American Himalayan Foundation, an extraordinary nonprofit that has transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in one of the world’s neediest regions. I first got involved with AHF shortly after the 1996 Mt. Everest disaster as a way to repay some of my personal debt to the kind, courageous Sherpas who did so much to assist me and other survivors of that calamity. Hit the link in my profile to learn more about himalayanfdn and the important work we do for the people of Nepal, India, and Bhutan. Posted by @krakauernotwriting on Nov 22, 2022 10:55PM

Headed up into the high country this morning to catch the sunrise and got an early taste of winter: Not much snow on the ground yet in this part of the Front Range, but the temperature was 3 below zero F. when I took this photo Posted by @krakauernotwriting on Nov 15, 2022 06:18PM

It’s Pat Tillman’s birthday. He would be 46 years old if he hadn’t been killed by friendly fire in 2004 while serving as an Army Ranger in Afghanistan. Pat and his brother Kevin (whom Pat called “Nub”) enlisted together after 9/11 as an act of patriotism, and then, unexpectedly, were initially deployed to Iraq—a war Pat thought was “illegal” and “had little or no justification other than imperial whim.” As he noted in his journal, “Nub & I have willingly allowed ourselves to be pawns in this game and will do our job whether we agree with it or not. All we ask is that it is duly noted that we harbor no illusions of virtue.” The night before the invasion of Iraq, Pat confessed in his journal that he was troubled about the pain he’d inflicted on his loved ones by enlisting: “I love my wife more than myself yet drag her through the same puddle…. Where is my passion directed?... Sometimes my need to love hurts—myself, my family, my cause…. But I refuse to stop loving, to stop caring. To avoid those tears, that pain…. To err on the side of passion is human and right and the only way I’ll live.” He was a complicated, fascinating man—even more so than most people realize. Big news from friendsofbus142: $500,000 has been provided to the University of Alaska Museum of the North for completing conservation work needed to prepare “Into the Wild” Bus 142 for permanent public exhibit in Fairbanks. The funds were awarded from the Institute of Museum and Library Services as part of the “Save America’s Treasures” grant program.
