John Henry Jones Jr. (born March 30, 1961) is an American college basketball coach who is currently the head coach at Texas Southern University.

He was previously the men's basketball head coach at North Texas and LSU's alma mater LSU.

Personal life

John Jones' son, John, is a college basketball player. He played for the Nevada Wolf Pack under his dad's tenure from 2017-to-date and then moved to the Texas Southern Tigers when his father was hired as head coach in 2018.

Playing career

Jones attended LSU as a freshman and spent 12 seasons as an assistant coach under Dale Brown, where the pair returned to the 1986 Final Four.

Coaching career

Jones was hired interim head coach at the University of Memphis right before the 1999-2000 season, replacing Tic Price. He coached the team to a 15-16 record.

During Jones' time at North Texas, he coached the Mean Greens to five-straight 20-win seasons from 2007–11, as well as two Sun Belt tournament championships and NCAA tournament bids. North Texas was just the third team to qualify for three consecutive Sun Belt Tournament championship games under Jones.

Jones had a 90–72 (.566) overall record at LSU, with a 42-48 (.467) SEC record in five seasons. During the 2014–15 season, he led LSU to one NCAA tournament berth, losing to N.C. State in the first round, and one NIT berth in 2013–14. Jones' staff had been invited to compete in the NIT in the 2016 season, but the University stepped in and turned down the invitation.

Jones was appointed head basketball coach at Texas Southern on June 27, 2018.
