Career

He made his Broadway debut in Kalfin's production of Isaac B. after a directing apprenticeship at both the Chelsea Theatre under Robert Kalfin and the Public Theater with Joseph Papp. Tovah Feldshuh, the singer's Yentl opposite for whom he received the Theatre World Award, was lauded. Yentl's performance began off Broadway at the Chelsea Theatre Center for Performing Music and was relocated to the Eugene O'Neill Theatre by producer and Actors Studio co-founder Cheryl Crawford, who later turned it into a film starring Barbra St'Neill. After seeing his appearance, Lee Strasberg invited Shea to join the Actors Studio, where he spent many years researching method acting. Shea has continued to work in Off-Broadway and Broadway theatre productions, starring Linda Hunt and Barnard Hughes in Arthur Kopit's End of the World. He appeared in Eight Is Enough and Man from Atlantis, a Universal miniseries, in 1977, during his first trip to Los Angeles to get experience in front of a camera.

Joseph made his television film debut in The Nativity (1978) opposite Madeleine Stowe as Mary, a biblical epic shot in Spain. In Matthew Chapman's English film noir Hussy (1980), opposite Helen Mirren, his debut appeared in his first film appearance. He made his American debut in Missing (1982), which starred Jack Lemmon and Sissy Spacek. The film, which was shot on location in Mexico, also won the Palme d'Or at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival and aided in Shea's international acting debut.

Shea was invited to accompany Molly Ringwald's winning How I Learned to Drive, Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey Into Night, Peter Parnell's The Sorrows of Stephen, Stephen Cooper's The Animal Kingdom opposite Sigourney Weaver in the early 1980s, as well as the following: Shea's Way to the Moon, A. R. Gurney's The Story of Stephen: The Animal Kingdom's The Animal Kingdom Shea continued to be cast in Nancy Hasty's The Producer's film and, later, in Israel Horovitz' The Secret of Madame Bonnard's Bath.

Shea and Kate Capshaw appeared in Armyan Bernstein's Windy City in 1984. In 1984, he received the "Best Actor" award at the Montreal World Film Festival.

He co-hosted the largest peace rally in the United States in 1982, with Kathryn Walker. In which Shea made a cameo appearance, this rally was the subject of Robert Richer and Stan Warnow's 1984 documentary film In Our Hands.

Shea appeared in "The Soldier" in Tom O'Horgan's 1985 production of Igor Stravinsky's L'Histoire du Soldat, with Pinchas Zukerman and Andre de Shields. He also appeared in a French language speaking role in Lune de miel last year. He made his London debut in 1986, appearing in Joseph Papp's production of Larry Kramer's "The Normal Heart" at the Albery Theatre.

Baby M, ABC's first television miniseries in 1987, in which Shea was played, was produced. William "Bill" Stern's portrayal earned him critical acclaim, resulting in him being nominated and winning his first Emmy Award for Supporting Drama Actor. He appeared in Small Sacrifices alongside Farrah Fawcett in 1989, and later in Jim Goddard's British production of Kennedy, starring Martin Sheen and Blair Brown, in which Shea portrayed another Bates slumnus, Robert F. Kennedy.

Shea appeared in Grant Tinker's 1990 CBS series WIOU, written by John Eisendrath and Kathryn Pratt, for a brief period until the show's cancellation.

Shea appeared in the television film Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman as Lex Luthor in 1993. His portrayal of the DC Comics superhero in received rave reviews, but he left early in the first season and appeared in later seasons as a guest artist.

When asked about Luthor's portrayal, Shea pointed out the difference between his portrayal and that of Gene Hackman.

Shea appeared in Mutant X, a Lois & Clark film in which he was cast as Adam Kane. The show aired for three seasons before being cancelled.

Shea co-wrote and directed the independent film Southie, starring Donnie Wahlberg, Rose McGowan, Amanda Peet, Anne Meara, Will Arnett, and Lawrence Tierney. The film received the Seattle International Film Festival Award for Best Film, represented the United States at the Montreal International Festival, and Lions Gate Films distributed it. Shea became Dominic on Sex and the City a month later. In addition, he appeared in Sebastian Cole's independent film Adventures. Shea was hired later this year to be a reader on Selected Shorts for Symphony Space, a national broadcaster on Public Radio International. In 1999, Truman Capote's "A Christmas Memory" received the Earphones Award from AudioFile Magazine as part of the anthology Selected Shorts: Classic Tales, Vol. 1. XII.

Shea was invited to join the recurring cast as Harold Waldorf, Blair Waldorf's father, when casting for Gossip Girl began in 2007. His portrayal of the character earned him more traction among young people and contributed to his appearance in American meme and popular culture. He appeared in Scott Dacko's 2006 political drama The Insurgents, starring Mary Stuart Masterson.

Jeffery, Cary Ago's father, was a recurring character on The Good Wife later in 2009. He made his Indian cinema debut with the 2009 Tamil drama Achchamundu. Achchamundu!, directed by Indo-American film director Arun Vaidyanathan, became the first American actor to appear in a Tamil film. The film received a lot of praise and deserved acclaim.

In the English dub of the animated film Gandahar, Shea performed central character Sylvain. He appeared in Jessica Alba's 2010 American drama film An Invisible Sign.

In the 2012 romantic comedy The Trouble With the Truth, Shea was portrayed alongside Lea Thompson. He supervised a 40th anniversary production of Edward Goy's Dracula in the summer of 2013.

Shea appeared in Madam Secretary as Ted Graham at the start of 2014. Eric Dane, Natalie Zea, Adrian Lester, Carolyn Stotesbury, Chris Meyer, and Amy Madigan appeared in Grey Lady, a romantic thriller set on Nantucket starring Eric Dane, Natalie Zea, Adrian Lester, Carolyn Stotesbury, Chris Meyer, and Amy Madigan later this year. In August 2015, Beacon Pictures and shot by Andrzej Bartkowiak made the independent film. In the summer of 2017, it was available on DVD and several streaming services.

Shea appeared on Agent X as Thomas Eckhart in 2015. In a 2016 episode of Bones, Shea would play Dr. Marcus Eldridge.

Lindsay Castelli Bullock, 31, the owner of Linny's Boutique in Plainview, New York, was arrested in October on suspicion of counterfeiting after her shop was searched by cops. The store's owner has now evicted her. On Thursday, the mother-of-four appeared in court with her husband, Andrew Bullock, by her side. When approached by DailyMail.com, her advocate, John Shea, said his client was 'looking for the truth to come out open honestly.'
