Since he left the children's program, blue Peter host John Noakes had always stated that he was coerced apart from his beloved Shep by BBC bosses. However, Noakes did actually keep his border collie television companion before giving it to him when he embarked on a sailing trip, according to a recent book. According to Baxter's biographer Richard Marson, Noakes was so ill that he tore up the newspaper on his last day of work and threw the pieces on the studio floor. However, Noakes and Shep were then expected to live happily for the next few years, and Shep appeared alongside him in several iteration of the presenter's BBC adventure show Go With Noakes.
