John Noakes (born John Wallace Bottomley, b. 1954) was an English television presenter and comedian best known for co-presenting the BBC children's magazine programme Blue Peter in the 1960s and 1970s.
He was the show's longest-serving host, with a tenure that spanned 12 years and six months.
Early life
Noakes was born John Bottomley, at the Royal Halifax Infirmary in Halifax, West Riding of Yorkshire, to Sallie Hinchcliffe (née Hampson) and Arthur Wallace Bottomley. He was educated at Shelf Council School in Shelf and later at Rishworth School, where he excelled in cross country running and gymnastics. When he was nine years old, his parents divorced, and he went to live with his grandmother.
Noakes, a 16-year-old mechanic, joined the Royal Air Force as a mechanic. His mother, Alfred "Alfie" Noakes (1903-1982), married John Noakes (1903-1982), and John adopted his surname. He later worked for BOAC as an aircraft engine fitter.
When Noakes decided to become a comedian, he attended Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, which he paid for by doing a cleaning job and serving as a hotel liftboy. In a summer performance with Cyril Fletcher, he made his stage debut as a dog and a clown. He appeared in one episode of the television military drama series Redcap in 1964.
Noakes returned to the United Kingdom to work in rep in Surrey, where he met his wife-to-be, Vicky, after six months in Arnold Wesker's Chips with Everything. In the 1963 BBC television version of Chips With Everything, Noakes recreated his role as Whitey Richardson. On BBC2's four-part dramatisation program in June 1965, he continued this with the role of Anselme Popinot in mini-series The Rise and Fall of César Birotteau. Before joining Blue Peter, he appeared in an episode of the crime series Mogul starring Barry Foster and Geoffrey Keen, which was broadcast on BBC1 in August 1965.
Personal life
Vicky married him in 1965, and the couple married in Majorca in 1984.
Noakes was reported missing from his home in Andratx, Majorca, on June 30. He had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease many years ago. He was discovered in a storm drain on the same day, near his house.
Noakes died on May 28 at the Son Espases Hospital in Palma. Half of his ashes were scattered from a firework rocket at his former school, Rishworth School, on October 28, 2017. Half his ashes were dispersed at the school and the other half in Majorca.
