John Moses Career

Political career

Moses served as the State's Attorney for Mercer County from 1919 to 1933, and then from 1927 to 1933. He came in third place in the three-way governor's election in 1936, behind former governor William Langer and incumbent governor Walter Welford (both Republicans). Following William Langer's second term in office, Moses became governor in 1939. Moses worked hard to minimize Langer's clout. He wanted to reduce government spending and to balance the state's budget. During World War II, Moses was in charge. He tried to persuade war-time industries to locate in the state, but North Dakota came last in the nation for receiving war funding. Moses' reign was a period of prosperity for the state despite a lack of wartime appropriations. Rainfall was plentiful, and there was a booming demand for agriculture products. Moses was a popular governor. He gave speeches in English, German, or Norwegian, depending on his target. Moses, a Democrat, was praised by both political parties for his support. Moses defeated Gerald P. Nye for a seat in the US Senate in 1944.
