John Atta Mills Life

John Evans Fiifi Atta Mills (21 July 1944 – 24 July 2012) was a Ghanai politician and law scholar who served as President of Ghana from 2009 to 2012.

He was unveiled on January 7, 2009, after defeating Nana Akufo-Addo in the 2008 election.

He served in the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections as the candidate of the National Democratic Congress from 1997 to 2001.

He is the first Ghanaian head of state to die in office.

Early life

Mills was born in Tarkwa, Ghana's Western Region, on July 21. His parents, John Atta Mills, Sr., an educator who taught at the Komenda Teacher Training College and Mercy Dawson Amoah, were among his teachers. He was the second child (and first son) of seven siblings. He hails from Ekumfi Otuam, a member of the Fante ethnic group of Ghana's Central Region, and he hailed from the town of Ekumfi Otuam. He received his primary and middle school education at Huni Valley Methodist Primary School and Komenda Methodist Middle School respectively. He then moved to Achimota School for secondary education, where he obtained the Ordinary and Advanced-Level Certificates in 1961 and 1963 respectively, as well as the University of Ghana, Legon, where he obtained a bachelor of law degree, LLB, and a professional law license in 1967.

Mills obtained his LLM degree in 1968 and earned a PhD in Law at the School of Oriental and African Studies School of Law, part of the London University of London, after completing his doctoral thesis in the field of taxation and economic growth in 1971 at the age of 27. Even during his political career, he was often referred to as The Professor, a remark on his long academic career. In the Akan language, his political allegiances also identified him as "King of Peace."

Personal life

He was married to Ernestina Naadu Mills (née Botchway), an educator, and had a son, Sam Kofi Atta Mills. He was born a Protestant in the Methodist faith. Thomas Hutton-Mills, Jr., Jr., a distant cousin of the well-known Gold Coast attorney. He was a loyal friend of T. B. Joshua of The Synagogue, Church of All Nations in Lagos, Nigeria, and he often visited his synagogue. Joshua had hoped that it would take him three elections to win the presidency, and that the results would be announced in January, according to him.

As a sports administrator, he served with the Ghana Hockey Association, National Sports Council of Ghana, Ghana Olympic Committee, and Accra Hearts of Oak Sporting Club. He was chairman for a short time. He loved playing field hockey and swimming, and he played for the national hockey team before (he died while being a member of the Veterans Hockey Team). He was both a board member of Hearts of Oak, the former chairman of the Black Stars' management team, and a Manchester United supporter.

John Atta Mills Career

Early career

Mills' first formal teaching job was as a lecturer at the University of Ghana's Faculty of Law. He spent nearly twenty-five years teaching at Legon and other institutions of higher education. He was accepted into Stanford Law School's Fulbright Scholar program in 1971.

At the end of the international educational exchange fellowship, he returned to Ghana to work at his alma mater, the University of Ghana, for 25 years. He served as a visiting professor at Temple University (Philadelphia, USA), from 1978 to 1979, and 1986 to 1987. From 1985 to 1986, he was also a visiting lecturer at Leiden University in the Netherlands. During this time, he wrote several books about taxation in the 1970s and 1980s.

Mills served as Acting Commissioner of Ghana's Internal Revenue Service from 1988 to 1993 under President Jerry John Rawlings, as well as the substantive Commissioner from 1993 to 1996. He had been appointed as an Associate Professor of Law at the University of Ghana by 1992. He was a visiting scholar at the Liu Institute for Global Issues at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia, as part of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) – International Development Research Centre (IDRC) fellowship program in 2002.
