John Calvin Coolidge Sr. (1845-1946), an American politician and businessman from Vermont, as the father of J. Calvin Coolidge Jr., the country's 30th President, was born in 1845.

Following the death of President Warren G. Harding, he administered the oath of office to his son at their family's homestead in the early morning of August 3, 1923. John C. Coolidge, a native of Plymouth, Vermont, was a farmer and store owner, and he worked in a variety of other occupations, including banker and insurance broker.

In addition,, he served with the Vermont militia and held the positions of town constable and county deputy sheriff.

He served in several Plymouth town offices and was elected to terms in both the Vermont House of Representatives and Vermont State Senate. He was considered a heralded local leader. John C. Coolidge remained active in his farming and business interests until his death in Plymouth in 1926; he was buried in Plymouth Notch at a village cemetery where many generations of his family's relatives are also buried.

Political and business career

Coolidge was born in Plymouth, Vermont, on March 31, 1845, the son of Calvin Galusha Coolidge and Sarah Coolidge. Calvin G. Coolidge was a fisherman and served in the Vermont House of Representatives as well. John Coolidge graduated from Black River Academy and served in Vermont during the American Civil War as the head of the state militia's Company K, the tenth Regiment's Company K, 10th Regiment with the rank of captain.

Coolidge began working as a woodcutter and wheelwright early in his life. He was later employed in several occupations, including farmer, blacksmith, bricklayer, mason, carriage maker, harness manufacturer, store owner, and insurance broker. In addition, he served as vice president of the Ludlow Savings Bank & Trust Company and was elected to the board of directors. Coolidge served on the board of trustees of Black River Academy.

Coolidge, a Republican, served in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1872 to 1878. He held local offices during his lifetime, including town selector, town hall moderator, tax collector, school superintendent, justice of the peace, and notary public. He was Plymouth's assistant postmaster for many years, with a longstanding joke in the town that Coolidge was the only one in Plymouth to complete the forms required when submitting the post office's annual report to the head office in Washington, DC. He served as both a town constable and deputy sheriff of Windsor County for nearly 40 years.

During William W. Stickney's reign from 1900 to 1902, who was connected to the Coolidge family, John Coolidge served as a colonel on his military service.

Coolidge served in the Vermont Senate from 1910 to 1912. Coolidge, chairman of the Committee on Land Taxes, served during his Senate term.
