John Byner (born John Biener, 1936) is an American actor, comedian, and impressionist who has had a long television and film career.
His voice work includes the cartoon series The Ant and the Aardvark, in which the title characters are voiced by Byner's interpretations of Dean Martin and Jackie Mason, respectively.
Personal life
Byner was born John Biener, a truck mechanic in New York City, on June 28, 1938, the son of Christina, a medical hospital attendant, and Michael Biener, a truck mechanic.
Byner has been married four times and has four children with Eleanor Belcher, his first wife. On "Captain's Log with Captain Mark Gray," one of his sons, Don (Donny) Byner, closely resembles his father and appears on television for the first time as a leprechaun. He has been married to Anne Gaybis since 1992.
Career
Among other things, he imitated Ed Sullivan on The Ed Sullivan Show, where he made his first television appearances. John Wayne appeared on several television shows, including Dean Martin and Johnny Mathis. During his appearances on panel shows including celebrity "roasts" and other tributes, George Jessel's ability to imitate "Toastmaster General" George Jessel came in handy.
On a 1967 episode of Get Smart, he played a KAOS agent who made a phone call to President Lyndon B. Johnson and told him he was fired and replaced with agent Maxwell Smart (Don Adams).
He appeared on Something Else, a syndicated half-hour musical variety series, from 1970 to 1971. In 1972, he hosted his own show, the John Byner Comedy Hour, where the character Super Dave Osborne, played by Bob Einstein, was first introduced. He made a cameo appearance in What's Up, Doc? the previous year. He appeared in two episodes of The Odd Couple in the mid-1970s.
In season 6 of Hawaii Five-O, Byner performed as a comedian/impersonator aboard a cruise ship. Duffy Malone's character performed impersonations of John Wayne and then was struck by the bad guy on the back of his head as a diversionary tactic. He appeared in The Practice, a situation comedy, for the first time in 1976.
He appeared on the television show Soap in the late 1970s as Detective Donahue. He was cast in Happy Days as Mork from Ork but found the story ridiculous, so he dropped the role days before filming began. It was revealed on May 26, 2017, that Byner had been cast in a supporting role in the Amazon Video horror anthology series Lore, which is based on the same podcast. Patrick Boland, the father of Bridget Cleary, is depicted by Byner. Lore premiered on October 13, 2017.
