Garrett Morris (born February 1, 1937) is an American comedian, actor, and singer.

He appeared on Saturday Night Live from 1975 to 1980. He was part of the original cast of the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live.

Morris appeared on the television show "Uncle Junior" King from 1996 to 2001.

Morris appeared on CBS sitcom 2 Broke Girls as Earl Washington from 2011 to 2017.

Early life and career

Morris was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on February 1, 1937, and grew up in the poverty-stricken Gert Town neighborhood in its 16th Ward. He studied at Juilliard School of Music and graduated from Dillard University in 1958. He was a child choir player from his youth. He appeared with The Belafont Folk Singers early in his career. Garnet Morris (EPC-601) with Pete Seeger and Guy Carawan for Folkways Records in 1960. He appeared in a number of Broadway musicals, including Hallelujah, Baby! And Ain't Supposed to Die by Natural Death. He worked with Amiri Baraka, Sun Ra, Albert Ayler, and Sonia Sanchez at Harlem's Black Arts Repertory Theatre/School; during this time, the theater was routinely raided and searched by the New York City Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He appeared in The Anderson Tapes (1971) and was a cast member of Roll Out, the short lived CBS sitcom. In the 1975 film Cooley High, he appeared as a high school coach.

Morris spent his time in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Later life and career

Morris appeared in the film Car Wash in 1976, portraying Slide the bookmaker. Morris appeared in five episodes of The Jeffersons in 1983 and 1984, portraying a character named Jimmy. He appeared in The Census Taker, a 1984 black comedy directed by Bruce R. Cook.

He appeared in Larry Cohen's science fiction horror film The Stuff in 1985, playing cookie magnate "Chocolate Chip Charlie," a parody of Famous Amos. She Wrote the name "Lafayette Duquesne" on Murder as "Lafayette Duquesne" in that year. Morris began playing "Arnold 'Sport' James" on the NBC cop drama Hunter, starring Fred Dryer and Stepfanie Kramer in 1986. In a 1987 season 1 episode and again in the season 23 episode "Requiem for a Dead Barber," Morris appeared in Married... with Children as Russ, one of Al's poker buddies. Garrett Morrison was often referred to as "Sporty" on Hunter until 1989. Oliver Reed appeared in the 1992 horror film Severed Ties.

He was "shot by a would-be mugger" who "attempted to fight off," but recovered on the January 14, 2016 episode of Marc Maron's podcast WTF. Morris said he was not jailed for the shooting but for parole offences for other offences, not for the shooting. He also said in another radio interview that the robber who shot him was eventually found and jailed. In jail, prisoners who happened to be Morris supporters joined up and beat up the robber in revenge. Morris was playing on Martin as Martin's first boss, Stan Winters, at the time of the shooting. Morris' shooting left him temporarily unable to continue in his role; he was forced out of the show by making the character appear as a national fugitive. On the hospital bed Morris was recovering from the 1994 assault, he was shot where he is about to have plastic surgery. During Stan's third season, he appeared as Stan for the final time, but the reason for Stan was that he crashed his car during a police chase.

Morris appeared on Diff'rent Strokes, The Jeffersons, Hill Street Blues, 227, and Roc. He appeared in an episode of Who's Boss, "Sam's Car" (1989), as Officer Audette. He appeared on The Jamie Foxx Show, portraying Jamie's uncle, Junior King, for the entire run.

Morris appeared in the fourth episode of the fifth season of the television series Space Ghost Coast to Coast in 1998. Morris made a cameo appearance on an episode of Saturday Night Live hosted by Brittany Murphy in 2002. In a cameo on the television show "Barely Legal," Morris reprised his role as "Headmaster of the New York School for the Unexpected" in 2006. He continued to appear in films on a regular basis. In downtown Los Angeles, he also owned and was the host of his own comedy club, The Downtown Comedy Club. Garrett Morris was lauded by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on February 9, 2007 for his service and contributions to the black community. Garrett Morris Day and The Downtown Comedy Club was the official club of Los Angeles on February 9, 2007. Morris appeared in The Longshots, a family comedy drama film starring Ice Cube and Keke Palmer in August 2008.

Morris appeared in two TV commercials for the Nintendo DS in 2009, one starring Mario Kart DS and the other featuring Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day! Morris appeared in a Miller Lite television commercial in 2010. Morris appears on "PopPop," a national commercial titled "PopPop," which also stars Stacey Dash and Jason Weaver. The commercial portrays a light-hearted glimpse at a family's love with Morris, PopPop, and Weaver as his grandsons. Morris has been in an Orbit gum commercial in the United States since summer 2010. Morris appeared on the showtime series Shameless as a Catholic priest in 2011. Earl in the CBS comedy 2 Broke Girls, which premiered on September 19, 2011. He was also named Earl in the CBS comedy 2 Broke Girls. He was accused by the Global Agency of failing to pay 10% of his income from the program as agreed during his second season. However, a show rep said he had not intended to fail to do so.

Morris appeared in Ant-Man's cameo in 2015, referring to an old SNL sketch in which he appeared in the first live-action incarnation of the character. Morris and his family appeared on the ABC's game show Celebrity Family Feud on September 9, 2016, competing against Alfonso Ribeiro and Ribeiro's colleagues. Morris appeared in The NBC program This Is Us in 2018. Morris appeared in the fifth episode of A Black Lady Sketch Show "Why Are Her Pies Wet Lord?" "It's been a long time" since "people on the internet."
