Personal life
Adams was born in North Little Rock, Arkansas, the youngest of three children. Her father was a lumber yard owner. Adams grew up in the Overbrook neighborhood of North Little Rock and graduated from North Little Rock Northeast High School in 1986. She announced her intention to pursue acting after one year as an exchange student in Australia. In a May 7, 1997, appearance on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" to promote Chasing Amy, Adams revealed she was a niece to Hee-Haw cast member and ordained minister Grady Nutt.
Adams married Brian Vilim in 2014.
Career
Adams started working in film in 1977, with a small part in Exorcist II: The Heretic. She went from there to play bigger roles. Adams appeared in "Top of the Heap," the 100th episode of Married... with Children's, in 1991, and later appeared in its short-lived spinoff. Adams appeared in Richard Linklater's Dazed and Confused in 1993 as Simone. She appeared in Coneheads, the Saturday Night Live spinoff film, as one of Connie Conehead's coworkers.
Adams appeared in Mallrats two years ago, written and directed by Kevin Smith. The two women began dating during the film's post-production, and Smith's next film, Chasing Amy, was inspired by their friendship. The friendship didn't last long, but it ended on friendly terms. In 1996, while Smith was finalizing the script for Chasing Amy, Adams was cast in the slapstick comedy Bio-Dome, which was directed by Jason Bloom. Monique, Bud Macintosh's (Pauly Shore) mother, was played by Adams.
In 1997's Chasing Amy, Adams portrayed Alyssa Jones, a lesbian who falls in love with a man played by Ben Affleck. Chasing Amy will later be described as a "sort of penance/valentine" and a "thank you homage" to Adams. Adams wrote and performed the song "Alive" for the film's soundtrack in addition to her acting roles.
Amy Adams' appearance in Chasing garners both the 1997 Chicago Film Critics Award and the Las Vegas Film Critics Society Award for Most Promising Actress and the Best Actress-Motion Picture Musical or Comedy award. Adams was supposed to appear in Smith's next film, 1999's Dogma, but Linda Fiorentino eventually took the lead role. However, she would make brief appearances in two other Smith projects, the 2001 film Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, and the 2004 animated short Clerks: The Lost Scene, which were both included on the Clerks X DVD. Adams reprises the role of Alyssa Jones in both of these appearances.
In 1998's A Cool, Dry Place, she did a play on a spunky veterinarian's assistant who falls in love with a single father (Vince Vaughn). Adams appeared in her first big-budget Hollywood film in the comedy Big Daddy, starring Adam Sandler's love for the successful comedy Big Daddy. She went on to appear in a number of smaller films, including Beautiful and In the Shadows. In 2005, she appeared in a Veronica Mars episode as a guest star.
Ashley Judd, Jeffrey Donovan, Diane Ladd, Tim Blake Nelson, and Laura Prepon appeared in Come Early Morning, Adams' directorial debut film. The film, which was shot on location in Little Rock, Arkansas, was selected for the 2006 Sundance Film Festival.
The Women in Film Dorothy Arzner Directors Award was given to her in 2006 by Lian Lunson and Nicole Holofcener. Adams' directorial debut for a music video called "Belle of the Boulevard" by Dashboard Confessional was released on November 24, 2009.
Adams appeared on TV in March 2010 on the Showtime show The United States of Tara. Pammy, a barmaid who falls for Buck in six episodes, was one of the title character's alternate personalities.
Adams is also known for her distinctive voice, which one film reviewer referred to as that of a "sex-kitten-on-helium." Adams said, "It's not a normal voice." It doesn't fit into people's preconceptions of what a woman's voice should sound like. However, my mother isn't sure I have an unusual voice. I'm positive it's helped me get some work done. However, Chasing Amy I almost didn't get. Some analysts were concerned that the voice would grate on certain people, which some commentators claimed did not." If viewers liked it or disliked it, another film critic said her voice had "the ability to hypnotize."
