Julie Vega Life

Julie Pearl Apostol Postigo (May 21, 1968 – May 6, 1985), better known by her stage name Julie Vega, was a Filipina child actress, singer, and commercial model.

She is still popular in her native Philippines, years after her death at the age of 16.

During her brief stint in showbusiness, she received two FAMAS Awards for Best Child Actress.

Early life and family

Vega was born in Quezon City, Philippines, to a young Roman Catholic family, and she was the youngest and only child of six children of dentists Julio Postigo (1931–1991) from Zamboanga del Sur and Perla Apostol (born 1932) from Iligan City. Darling and Tata, her family's name, denotes "newest child" in the Visayan language, and she was given to her by her nanny Flor Argawanon.

Education

Vega was also able to attend her classes despite her juggling showbiz schedule. She attended Our Lady of Sacred Heart School from grade school to first-year high school before heading to St. Joseph's College, where she completed her high school training. Since both are located not far from where her family used to live at 11th Avenue, Murphy, Cubao, Quezon City, Quezon City, she proved to be highly accessible.

Illness and early death

Vega began experiencing extreme anxiety and lack of sensation, particularly on her lower body, not long after her high school graduation in 1985. Her parents had to bring her daughter to a private hospital because of this. She was later diagnosed with a form of demyelinating disease, which was widely thought to be either Guillain–Barré syndrome or multiple sclerosis. Her parents were compelled to confine her to the Quezon Institute because they couldn't afford the increasing cost of her hospital bills as Vega's health worsened. She developed bronchopneumonia shortly after her confinement there, making her condition even worse than before.

Vega died at around 5:00 p.m. on Monday, May 6, 1985, just 15 days shy of her seventeenth birthday. Her cause of death was officially classified as cardiac arrest secondary to bronchopneumonia. Julio, the father of Vega's son, died of lung cancer in the same hospital six years ago. Anna Liza was left with an incomplete storyline and the Filipino people in complete surprise as a result of her untimely death. Her body was laid to rest right next to those of her father, uncle, and paternal grandmother at Mount Carmel Church in Quezon City in a funeral attended by millions of mourning supporters and colleagues from the Philippine showbiz.

Vega left behind a significant body of unfinished work aside from Anna Liza at the time of her death. She was supposed to launch First Love, perform with Imelda Papin in singing engagements both in the Philippines and abroad, and as alternate host of Student Canteen on GMA, as one of the upcoming teen-oriented talent show That's Entertainment is scheduled to be a national television network. She was also supposed to attend the University of the Philippines for her college education.

Life story

Vega's life tale was the most well documented on film through The Life of Julie Vega, which was released shortly after her death. Nadia Montenegro portrayed Jimmy Morato and Alicia Alonzo, the ill-fated film and soap opera actress and singer, while her brother Steve and nanny Floria came as themselves. Jestoni Alarcon, John Regala, and Hero Bautista were also depicted in the film by Entertainment mainstays Jestoni Alarcon, John Regala and Hero Bautista. Young Julie Vega appeared on television, through Angelica Panganiban and Jane Oineza's episode Unan (Tagalog for Pillow), released on October 2, 2003. Michael de Mesa and Rio Locsin portrayed Vega's parents. Both critics and Julie Vega fans alike loved the episode, but also for the use of a real footage of Vega's burial, which featured not only supporters but also celebrities such as Fernando Poe, Jr., Nida Blanca, Herbert Bautista, and best friend Janice De Belen in mourning her death. The video was lent to the Maala Mo Kaya producers for the episode by the Postigos.

Julie Vega Career

Showbiz career

Vega was discovered by film and stage director Lamberto Avellana and actress Boots Anson-Roa in 1975 after appearing at a Christmas party at the Quezon Institute where her mother then worked, resuming her work as a commercial model in television for Purefoods and Band-Aid the following year. Darling Postigo appeared in her first film, Ang Pag-ibig Mong Sukatin, as the young daughter of Anson-Roa and Dante Rivero. Julie Vega, the film's first big lead and breakthrough in 1978's Mga Mata ni Angelita, was not until she started using the screen name Julie Vega on the recommendation of film producer and director Larry Santiago, who owned Larry Santiago Productions, who produced the film. Despite being selected third out of over 200 candidates for the role, she had been chosen to perform the title role.

Despite the fact that Vega had to drop Flor de Luna's title due to her commitment with acting and school, she would finally have her own soap opera when she was cast as the title character in GMA Network's Anna Liza. Her portrayal of the complex, sad, and often mocked title character drew the respect and admiration of the Filipino viewing public and strengthened her celebrity. Anna Liza's triumph made her the top soap opera rival of Janice de Belen, a fellow child actor who also enjoyed success with Flor de Luna, a role she had no interest in catching the television audience's attention. Despite being rivals, the two were still the best friends in real life. "If Julie accepted the role as Flor de Luna," De Belen once said, "there may be no me."

In addition to her work in Anna Liza, Vega has appeared in many films and received two FAMAS acting awards overall. Mga Mata is a Malaysian girl from Australia, she was named Best Child Actress for Mga Sisiw and Best Supporting Actress for Isang Bala Ka Lang.

As Vega was a teenager, she was contracted by producer Lily Monteverde, who also owned the film company since its inception in 1962. She was then included in the so-called Regal "Cry Babies" alongside De Belen, Maricel Soriano, and Snooky Serna. She appeared in six films for Regal, including Where Love Has Gone, Mother Dear, To Mama with Love, and Daddy's Little Darlings, all of which were certified box office hits.

Singing career

Vega, aside from acting, has been a very popular singer in her own right. She initially refused to pursue a singing career on her own, but after repeated requests from her older brother Joey, who heard her stunning singing voice, she eventually agreed to doing so. To fine tune her singing voice, she took formal voice lessons under renowned songwriter Cecille Azarcon. With the preparation she received, she was able to perform many of the theme songs of films including Dear Mama, Where Love Has Gone, Don't Cry for Me Papa, and Iiyak Ka Rin.

It was during one of her singing appearances for Where Love Has Gone that Vega was discovered by Bong Carrion, who then offered her to work as a recording artist for the newly formed Emerald Recording Company, which owned Carrion and his then wife, Imelda Papin. Somewhere in My Past, Mon Del Rosario's debut single, was a gold record in just its first few weeks of being released, and it would be her most enduring hit and the one song she would be most identified with. Bong Carn and Imelda Papin decided to debut Vega as a full-time solo artist by releasing songs such as Somewhere in My Past, The Memory Will Remain, and the single's name.

According to Vega, she loved singing because it is through this medium that she is able to accurately express her inner thoughts and feelings. This became particularly poignant after her brother Joey's death, to whom she was especially close. While hanging out with his relatives in 1983, Joey was stabbed to death in a hired killers who mistook him for another individual they were supposed to look for and kill. Julie, the teen girl who then desperately wanted to join him in death, died unexpectedly at the age of 22.
