Joelinton Cássio Apolinário de Lira (born 14 August 1996), better known as Joelinton, is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a centre forward for English club Newcastle United.

Joelinton joined Hoffenheim in 2015 and was loaned to Rapid Wien for two years starting his career with Sport Recife.

He has also been capped for the Brazil under-17 national team.

Club career

Joelinton, a native of Aliança, Pernambuco, joined Sport Recife in 2012 and spent two years with the youth team. He was promoted to the senior squad in 2013, but it wasn't until March 2014 that he made his professional debut against city rivals Santa Cruz that was a Copa do Nordeste match. In the 2–1 away semi-final victory (4–1 aggregate), he appeared as a 62nd-minute replacement for Neto Baiano. Sport won the cup with a 3–1 aggregate victory over Ceará in the final; Joelinton did not participate. In the Campeonato Pernambucano season, he was on the bench six times, which the team also won.

Joelinton made seven appearances in the 2014 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A season, his fourth appearance in the competition. He scored his first goal in his career on November 23 in a 2–2 home draw with Fluminense, and against So Paulo after four minutes on the last day.

Joelinton made his mark in the 2015 state league's first team. In the second phase, he had two straight red cards against Santa Cruz and Náutico.

Hoffenheim signed Joelinton on a five-year deal in June 2015. In a 1–0 loss at Schalke 04 on December 18, he appeared only once in his first season in Germany as a last-minute replacement for Jonathan Schmid.

Joelinton was loaned to Rapid Wien for two years beginning on June 23, 2016. He made his debut in the Austrian Cup against Regionalliga Ost club FC Karabakh Wien on July 8th, scoring the first goal of a 3–1 victory. He made the semifinals at home to LASK Linz on April 26, 2017, a one-time winner. Die Grün-Weißen reached the final for the first time in 126 years. In the final at the Worthersee Stadion on June 1, he equalized, but FC Red Bull Salzburg won 2–1.

Joelinton appeared in all ten of Rapid's 2016-17 UEFA Europa League games, scoring in a 3–2 victory over Genk and a 1–1 draw with Athletic Bilbao at the Allianz Stadion on December 8th. He scored 8 goals in 33 games, including one to cap a 4–1 victory over city rivals FK Austria Wien on August 7th, but the Viennese club finished fifth of ten teams and missed out on European football.

Joelinton was sent off after 23 minutes in a 2–2 home draw with SV Mattersburg on July 22, 2017 for kicking back after being fouled by Michael Novak.

Joelinton got off to a good start in a DFB-Pokal first round match at 1. In a 6–1 victory, FC Kaiserslautern won a hat-trick, while a hat-trick. He scored his first Bundesliga draw with Borussia Dortmund on September 22nd, and as a replacement on October 23th, he scored an added-time equalizer against Lyon in a Champions League group game at the Rhein-Neckar-Arena.

Joelinton joined Newcastle United on a six-year contract for a reported club record fee of £40 million. He made his debut on August 11th, starting with a 1–0 home loss to Arsenal; he and teammate Miguel Almirón were chastised by the club's all-time record scorer Alan Shearer for their results.

In a 1–0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on August 25, Joelinton scored his first Premier League goal. In a 4–1 FA Cup Third Round replay victory over Rochdale, he didn't have to score his second goal for the club until January 14, 2020, netting the final goal. In a 3–0 win over Sheffield United on June 21, he scored his first home league goal, bringing an end to a 2,130-minute drought. Joelinton scored two goals in 38 appearances for the club, six of whom came from the bench in the 2019-20 season. He doubled his goal total in the 2020–21 season, with eight of whom were from the bench.

Joelinton has been deployed as a box-to-box central midfielder since Eddie Howe took over as Newcastle United's boss from 2021-22 years, to the point where he is now a fan favorite, with a banner dedicated to the volutive Brazilian midfielder often being carried by the crowd before home matches. Joelinton has played a key role in Newcastle's midfield, frequently making vital interceptions and tackles to break oppositional play. His results were in stark contrast to those of previous seasons in the Premier League. Following his career revival in a higher role, Joelinton was named the Newcastle United Player of the Year Award for the 2021–22 season.
