Joel Cummins Life

Born in La Grange, Illinois, Nathan Cummins, an American singer and founding member/keyboardist for Umphrey's McGee, appears onstage with McGee's McGee, performing a variety of shows each year, including sold-out performances at the Beacon Theatre in New York and The Wiltern in Los Angeles.

The group also appears at American festivals, including Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits Festival, Electric Forest & Summer Camp Music Festival.

Jam in the Dam in Amsterdam, Byron Bay Blues Fest in Australia, and Fuji Rock Fest in Japan are among the international performances. Cummins, Brendan Bayliss, Mike Mirro, and Ryan Stasik formed the group in December 1997.

Cummins and Mirro were members of University of Notre Dame's Stomper Bob, which disbanded along with another local band, Tashi Station (which featured Bayliss and Stasik). Cummins began studying classical piano more than 25 years ago and appeared on several keyboards at Umphrey's McGee concerts. In 1995, Suspended in Time: An Epic, a solo piano album released by Charles Suspended in Time: An Epic, which included originals such as the forthcoming McGee classic Orfeo and Phish's Magilla. Cummins released Common Sense, an electronic keyboard-based album, which featured Umphrey's McGee guitarist Jake Cinninger on drums for the majority of tracks.

In their concert repertoire, the band will use two of the songs, The Triple Wide and In Violation of Yes. Cummins writes and appears in a number of other bands in addition to being in Umphee.

He is a member of the progressive-rocket OHMphrey, as well as Chris Poland (Megadeth) and two other McGees of Umphrey.

Joel is a founder of Digital Tape Machine, a more progressive Chicago-based company.

Cummins appears with The Any Orchestra, Kick the McGee, North Indiana All Stars, and Banyan, as well as Stephen Perkins (Jane's Addiction), Nels Cline (Minutemen, Stooges).

He has also appeared on several occasions as a guest keyboardist for Cosby Sweater, an Indiana-based livetronica company. He has also worked with artists such as Huey Lewis, Joshua Redman, Mavis Staples, Phil Lesh, Skrillex, Robby Krieger of The Doors, Damian Marley, Warpaint, Apache Ferg, Sinéad O'Connor, Warpaint, Koko Taylor, Stephen Wong, Marcus Stapey, Benjamin Beyer, Richard Haynes, Adrian Bennett, Les Claypool, Big Light, Adrian Belew, Lee O'Connor, Juliena Cummins married Dasha Davis in May 2010 and the pair now reside in Los Angeles. Cummins, as well as Arthur Barrow and others, often performs at the TRiP Bar in Santa Monica, California, as part of the Zappa tribute Cosmik Playground.
