Joseph David Keery (born April 24, 1992) is an American actor and singer.
He is best known for his role as Steve Harrington in the American science-fiction horror web television series Stranger Things, as well as a contributing musician for the American psychedelic rock band Post Animal.
Early life
Keery was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts,. His father is an engineer, and his mother is an English professor. He is the second of five children.
Keery was born in Newburyport and attended River Valley Charter School, a local Montessori elementary and middle school, and Newburyport High School. As a child, he played in Theater in the Open, a performing arts camp at Maudslay State Park, but he eventually began to act in high school, first performing there at his older sister's insistence.
Keery continued to study at DePaul University and graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting.

Career
Keery, who graduated from DePaul, went on to over a hundred auditions. Keery appeared in a KFC, Domino's, and amiibo commercial before his breakout role in Stranger Things, and he appeared in Empire and Chicago Fire. In the Netflix sci-fi series Stranger Things, Keery's breakthrough role was as Steve. He appeared on stage in late 2015 and after initially auditioning for Jonathan, he then sent in a tape for his character, Steve. The show premiered in 2016 to critical acclaim. For the second season of Stranger Things, he was upgraded from a recurring cast to a series regular. In 2019, and 2022, respectively, the third and fourth seasons were released.
Keery has appeared in a few independent films, including starring in the 2020 satire film Spree. In the 2021 action comedy film Free Guy, which went on to become a major box-office hit, Walter "Keys" McKey, a game programmer, also appeared as a game designer. In the sci-fi action film Cold Storage, he was cast opposite Liam Neeson in May 2022. In August 2022, he appeared as Gator Tillman in the fifth season of Fargo.
Keery, in addition to acting, is also a singer. He began releasing music under the name "Cool Cool Cool" in his early twenties. Keery, a guitarist and drummer for Chicago-based garage and psychedelic group Post Animal, was born in Chicago. In October 2015, the group's debut album was released. When I Think Of You In A Castle, the band's second album, was released in April 2018 and featured Keery on guitar and vocals. Keery was no longer a touring member of the band as of 2019, and he eventually departed due to acting commitments.
Keery released the single "Roddy" as a solo artist under the moniker Djo on July 19, 2019. On August 9, 2019, Keery released "Chateau (Feel Alright)" as his second single under the same moniker. "Keep Your Head Up" was a new single by Joe On September 9, 2020. In 2022, he appeared on a summer music festival tour. In June 2022, Decide's sophomore album Decide was revealed, as well as the unveiling of its first single "Change." Positive feedback was given to the album on September 16, 2022.
