Joe Barry Career

Coaching career

Barry began his teaching career at the University of Southern California (USC), his alma mater, in 1994, as a graduate assistant. Barry Wilson joined Northern Arizona University as their linebackers coach in 1996, and he continued in that position from 1996 to 1998 before being recruited at University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).

Barry was hired by the San Francisco 49ers as a defensive quality control coach under defensive coordinator Jim Mora and head coach Steve Mariucci in 2000.

Barry was hired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as their linebackers coach under defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin and head coach Tony Dungy in 2001. The Buccaneers' new head coach, Robert Gruden, retained Barry, along with Kiffin in 2002. The Buccaneers won their first Super Bowl title and defeated the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXVII that season.

Barry was hired by the Detroit Lions as their defensive coordinator under new head coach Rod Marinelli, who is also Barry's father-in-law.

Following the Lions' 42-7 loss to the New Orleans Saints, Detroit News sports columnist Rob Parker asked whether Marinelli wished that his daughter had "married a better defensive coordinator" at a press conference on December 21, 2008. (Barry was the Lions' defensive coordinator at the time) The inquiry was criticized as unprofessional and ineffective. Parker wrote that the comment was "an attempt at humor" rather than a malicious attack the next day. Parker hasn't written for the Detroit News since being fired as the Lions' head coach, including the one Marinelli gave following his deposition as head coach. Parker had resigned from the newspaper the previous week, according to the Detroit News on January 6, 2009. Barry was not retained by the Lions after his dismissal of Marinelli.

Barry Moore returned and was recalled by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as their linebackers coach under defensive coordinator Jim Bates and head coach Raheem Morris in 2009.

Barry was hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars on January 26, 2010 and has agreed to serve as their linebackers coach. Barry Barry was fired from his employment on the same day, allowing him to join the University of Southern California (USC) as their linebackers coach.

Barry Was hired by the San Diego Chargers as their linebackers coach under defensive coordinator John Pagano and head coach Norv Turner in 2012. In 2013, Barry was retained by new Chargers head coach Mike McCoy.

Barry was recruited by the Washington Commanders as their defensive coordinator under head coach Jay Gruden in 2015. Barry was fired following the 2016 season.

Barry was hired by the Los Angeles Rams as their assistant head coach and linebackers mentor under head coach Sean McVay on January 14, 2017.

Barry was hired by the Green Bay Packers as their defensive coordinator under head coach Matt LaFleur on February 8, 2021, replacing Mike Pettine. He brought veteran linebacker De'Vondre Campbell, who had signed as a free agent on a $2 million contract, to first-Team All-Pro honors in his first year coordinating the unit. Despite losing star pass-rusher Za'Darius Smith and star cornerback Jaire Alexander for the majority of the season, his team finished as the NFL's ninth-ranked defense by yards allowed. Russell Wilson, the Seattle Seahawks quarterback, was shut down for the first time in his career during Week 11.

Barry and the Packers intercepted 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo once, sacking him four times and limiting him to 3 points through 55 minutes as the Packers led by 7. However, the Packers lost 13–10 after their special teams unit allowed a blocked punt to be reinstated for a game-tying touchdown with 4:41 to play, but the Packers' offense was unable to function on the following drive and had to punt with 2 minutes remaining, and the defense was unable to come up with a final stop as the Packers lost 13–10.
