Joseph Albani (born Joseph Albani; January 24, 1924-January 12, 1988) was an American modern jazz pianist who performed bebop with Charlie Parker as well as being a leader on his own recordings.

Life and career

Albany, a native of Atlantic City, New Jersey, studied piano as a child and was active in Benny Carter's orchestra by 1943. Lester Young, a 1946 singer from Albany, appeared as his pianist for Aladdin Records. He appeared at least once with Parker and then 20-year-old Miles Davis during the year. He went on for a few years afterward and released an album for Riverside in 1957, omitting a drummer. Despite this, the majority of the 1950s and 1960s saw him battle a heroin use or living in seclusion in Europe. During this time, he had several unsuccessful marriages. In the 1970s, he returned to jazz and appeared on more than ten albums. At the age of 63, he died of respiratory disease and cardiac arrest in New York City.

Joe Albany... A Jazz Life, 1980 documentary film about Albany. Low Down: Low Down: Junk, Jazz, and Other Fairy Tales from Childhood, his father, Amy-Jo wrote a memoir about her father. The book was adapted for the screen and released in 2014 as the biopic Low Down. Joe was also the biological father to Benjamin David Goldberg, who was adopted by another family shortly after being born. Benjamin David, a Juilliard percussionist, appeared on Broadway plays and was a member of the US Army Band.
