Jim Tomsula Career

Coaching career

In 1989, Tomsula began his teaching career at Catawba College as a strength and conditioning coach. After serving as an assistant coach at Charleston Southern under Defensive Coordinator Fred Hamilton from 1992 to 1995, he returned to Catawba College where he helped the Catawba Indians win four South Atlantic Conference Championships until 2005. Notably, Tomsula was inducted into the Catawba College Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.

Tomsula served as an assistant for many years in NFL Europe. He served as the defensive line coach for the London Monarchs in 1998 and the Scottish Claymores from 1999 to 2003. He took over the Berlin Thunder's defensive coordinator in 2004, a role he held for the 2004 and 2005 seasons. During the 2006 season, Tomsula became the Rhein Fire's head coach. The Fire will finish the season with a 6–4 record, but not qualify for the playoffs.

During the 2007 season, the 49ers recruited Tomsula to serve as their defensive line coach, and he stayed in that role through the 2014 season. After head coach Mike Singletary was suspended with just one game remaining in the season, Tomsula was named interim head coach for the Week 17 game against the Arizona Cardinals. He won his first game as the 49ers' head coach, 38–7 over the Arizona Cardinals. Jim Harbaugh, the Harbaugh's current head coach, kept Tomsula in his previous role as defensive line coach, where he will continue to serve for the entire Harbaugh era.

Tomsula became the 49ers' head coach on January 14, 2015, replacing Jim Harbaugh, who had been kicked out by 49ers CEO Jed York.

Tomsula's latest teaching methods included allowing his players breaks to check social media during meetings, shorter, simpler exercises, and more days off. The result was one of the worst offenses in team history. With Colin Kaepernick being suspended after being benched, the 49ers will struggle to a 5-11 record. Scoring only 238 points. In Week 14 of the 2015 regular season, the 49ers will be officially barred from postseason action.

Tomsula was fired just a few hours after the 49ers' season finale against the St. Louis Rams, which the 49ers defeated 19–16 in overtime. The 49ers will pay Tomsula $14 million for his one season as head coach, according to York on January 4, 2016.

Tomsula was hired as a defensive line coach for the Washington Redskins on January 23, 2017.

Tomsula was hired as the Dallas Cowboys' defensive line coach on January 8, 2020. Tomsula and defensive coordinator Mike Nolan were fired on January 8, 2021.

Former NFL Europe Rhein Fire head coach Jim Tomsula will also be the first head coach for the forthcoming season of the European League of Football in the 2022 preseason.
