Personal life

West was born in Vernon, Indiana, to Eldo Roy West and Grace Anna Milhous. She was Richard Nixon's second cousin through her mother's father. When she was six years old, her family left the state to California. Merle, Myron, and Carmen were among the family's three brothers and a sister. As Nixon's father, Frank, referred to as "a fiery persuasive tutor," West continued to attend a Sunday school class taught by Nixon's father, who referred to her as "a fiery persuasive tutor."
