Leave It to Beaver continues to prosper, more than half a century since its inception.
In over 80 countries in 40 languages, the original sitcom has been seen in more than 80 countries. According to mathematicians, the Leave It to Beaver phenomenon is widespread worldwide. Mathers has said, "I can go anywhere in the world, and people know me." "The Happy Boy and His Family is a television series in Japan." So I'll be walking through the airport in Japan and people will come up and say, 'Hi, Happy Boy!'"
Mathers replied, "No, not at all." When asked during a 2014 television interview whether he had known at the time of the filming of the Leave it to Beaver series that the show was special and would be in perpetual syndication." I had been working since I was two years old. I loved movies. I didn't do any other series, but I had seen a lot of movies and stuff like that, so every year, it was a question whether or not we would return for the next year. So we'll do 39 shows and then we'll fly to New York to speak with journalists, and then we'll all go to Chicago to meet the ad people, and then we'd come back and take about five to six weeks off, and if we were picked up, we'd start again. We did this for six years because it was the length of the contracts at the time. So there are 39 [episodes] for six years, and then it was off the air. We weren't off the air, but we didn't film any new ones [after that]"
Mathers remained friends with Barbara Billingsley, who appeared on television as June Cleaver, and he recalled her as "a loyal friend and a fantastic mentor" after her death. She was like the favorite teacher we all had in school."
Mathers recorded two songs on a single 45 rpm in 1962: "Don't 'Cha Cry," and the flip ditty "Wind-Up Toy" appeared on the back of a single 45 rpm. Mathers had Beaver and the Trappers in his high school days.
