Early life
Rothaniel Jerrod Carmichael was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, on April 6, 1987. Joe is his older brother. Carmichael grew up poor, which is a common theme in his stand-up comedy. He hosted a morning news show on his elementary school's local access channel in fifth grade. In 2005, he graduated from Robert B. Glenn High School in Kernersville, North Carolina. George Carlin, Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, and Sinbad were among his early comedic influences.

Carmichael lives in New York City. During his documentary film Home Videos (2019), he has addressed his friendships with both men and women. In his comedy special Rothaniel (2022), he came out as gay.
Career
Despite never having attempted it before, Carmichael and his family moved to Los Angeles at the age of 20 to pursue his dream of being a stand-up comedian. It was his first time doing stand-up at The Comedy Store in West Hollywood. He appeared in the "New Faces" showcase at the 2011 Just for Laughs Festival in Montreal, working his way up through the clubs. He appeared on the show The Goodwin Games (2013) and had his breakout role in the film Neighbors (2014). Spike Lee produced Love at the Store, his first HBO stand-up comedy special, which was shot at The Comedy Store.
Comedian Bo Burnham directed Carmichael's second stand-up comedy special, which was shot in the Grand Lodge Room of New York's Masonic Hall, directing the show. Carmichael's next co-created, co-wrote, produced, and appeared in the semi-biographical NBC sitcom The Carmichael Show (2015–2017), which was well-received and was notable for its envelope-pushing approach to controversial topics such as the Black Lives Matter campaign, LGBT rights, gun control, and the realities of being black in America.
