Jennifer Finch (also Jennifer Precious Finch), born August 5, 1966, is an American singer, designer, and photographer best known for her role as the main bass player of the punk rock band L7.
Finch performed with her bands OtherStarPeople and The Shocker in the interim from 1986 to 1996 before joining the reunited L7 in 2014.
Early life
Finch was born on August 5, 1966 and grew up in West Los Angeles. Robert Edward Finch, an aeronautics engineer, and his partner Sandra Jacobson were adopted in 1967, but they later divorced in 1974. Finch attributes her adoptive father, who was also an amateur photographer, to her creative growth. At an early age, Finch developed an interest in photography and attended a summer art show at Otis Parsons in 1980.
Personal life
Finch dated Nirvana's Dave Grohl and later Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins in the early 1990s. From 2000 to 2007, she was married to actor, singer, and race car racer Chris Pedersen. Finch lives in Culver City, California.
Career
Finch began her musical career in the mid 1980s. She played bass in the San Francisco-based band Sugar Babydoll (or Sugar Babylon) from 1984 to 1986. Courtney Love, the band's future founder of Hole and future Babes in Toyland's founder Kat Bjelland, appeared on the band's list. This line-up has a demo tape that has yet to be announced. Finch then appeared in the short-lived Hollywood band The Pandoras, which was formed by bassist Gwynne Kahn.
In 1986, Finch formed the Los Angeles-based punk rock band L7. Donita Sparks, a bandmate, described Finch as "persistent" in the documentary film L7: Pretend We're Dead, and said that after Finch joined the band, her networking skills and stage presence continued to greatly raise the band's momentum. She remained with L7 during the band's most profitable period in the early 1990s. Bricks Are Heavy (1990), and Smell the Magic (1994) by Finch. During this time, Finch was the sole songwriter for several of L7's hits, including "(Right On) Thru", "Everglade," "One More Thing," and "Shirley."
Finch and her L7 bandmate Demetra "Dee" Plakas performed with Japanese singer Hide in 1994, appearing in his original video for his song "Doubt."
Finch was featured in a Hole album live through this year in 1994, after the original bassist Kristen Pfaff died of an overdose in June of that year. Finch took the name "Precious" after her father's death in 1995 as an homage to him. In 1996, Finch officially left L7. Finch cites health and finances as reasons for her departure in the band's 2016 documentary We're Dead, as well as mourning over her father's death and the band's roadie and friend Umbar.
Finch wrote and performed with her band OtherStarPeople with Xander Smith after being kicked out of L7. Diamonds In The Belly Of The Dog was the band's debut on a new album in 1998; the band was signed to A&M Records/Interscope and the album was released in August 1999. According to Joshua Clover of Spin magazine, the OtherStarPeople album would have "less weight and more strangeness than Finch's old crew - it's L.A.-slick and punky dirt.
Finch appeared in Betty Blowtorch And Her Amazing True Life Adventures in 2003.
In Los Angeles, Finch formed The Shocker, a punk rock band. In 2003 and 2005, the band appeared on the Warped Tour for the first time. In 2003, the Shocker issued Up Your Ass Tray as an EP, which was followed by a full-length collection on Go-Kart Records. From 2006 to 2006, Finch served as the sole songwriter and primary singer of The Shocker.
Finch and Evie Evil of Evil Beaver co-founded a new band Sex in Progress in January 2011.
For the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Finch produced Brats on the Beat. The album features "kid friendly" interpretations of Ramones' songs, as well as guest vocals and music provided by various punk artists.
The L7 reformed in 2014 with Suzi Gardner, Donita Sparks, and Dee Plakas. They toured extensively and released new singles in 2017 and 2018.
Scatter the Rats, L7's most recent full album, was released on Blackheart Records on May 3, 2019 to generally positive reviews. The song "Garbage Truck" was written by Finch. Beginning on May 10, 2019, the band announced a six-week national tour.
Finch started photographing her friends in Los Angeles on a camera she was given by her father at the age of 13. These images eventually chronicled the early punk scene in which she was involved before joining L7 in 1986. Her photography (1979–1995) was on display at the Los Angeles Weekly sponsored art show at Aidan Ryley Taylor Gallery until November 18, 2006. Several key figures are included in the series, including photographs of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bad Faith, Red Kross, and The Cramps. As well as offering a generally grim representation of youth in Southern California, John Albert of LA Weekly said that Finch's photographs often depict the musicians in more personal moments as well as presenting a generally grim image of youth. In January 2007, Finch's photographs were on loan at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for display.
Finch appeared in the 1984 film The Census Taker and in the 1994 John Waters film Serial Mom as part of the fictitious band the Camel Lips. In the 2007 film Punk's Not Dead, Finch appeared as herself. In 1999, her music was included in Office Space and the famous television series Degrassi: The Next Generation.
In interviews and original footage from L7: Pretend We're Dead, directed by Sarah Price and released in November 2016, Finch appears in interviews and a video. The film was nominated for the Best Music Film Award by the Voice of Britain in the United Kingdom.
