James Genus Life

James Genus (January 20, 1966) is an American jazz bassist.

He plays electric bass guitar and upright bass, as well as being a member of the Saturday Night Live Band.

Genus has performed as a session guitarist and sideman throughout his career, having worked with an impressive list of artists. Genus was born in Hampton, Virginia.

At the age of six, he began playing guitar and then moved to bass at 13.

He attended Virginia Commonwealth University from 1983 to 1987, and volunteered at Busch Gardens Williamsburg in the summer.

Then migrated to New York City, where he began to work with many well-known musicians on the city's jazz scene right away.

He has appeared with Out of the Blue (1988-1989), Horace Silver (1989), Roy Haynes and Don Pullen (1989–91), Greg Osby (1990), T.S. (1991).
